An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly motivated nurse to join the Acute Oncology Service as a Band 7 Acute Oncology Nurse Practitioner. The post holder will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality specialist care to patients experiencing complications of cancer and its treatment, ensuring timely assessment, intervention, and coordination of care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care settings.
Qualifications in Health assessment and non-medical prescribing qualifications (or willingness to undertake) are preferable.
The successful candidate will work autonomously and collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to provide expert clinical leadership, support service development, and contribute to the delivery of national acute oncology standards. They will act as a key resource for patients, families, and healthcare professionals, ensuring patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide a specialist clinical role in facilitating high quality care for acutely ill oncology and haematology patients.
When clinically appropriate the post holder will undertake assessment and review of acute oncology / haematology patients within the Acute Trust.
The post holder will be expected to provide cover for the acute oncology service (nursing) on the Alexandra and Worcester Royal Hospital sites.
Co-ordinating and facilitating seamless delivery of care for acute oncology and haematology patients.
The post holder will share the coordination of AOS training to colleagues including the emergency departments/emergency medical teams ensuring compliance with quality surveillance measure.
The post holder will share the coordination of mentorship to the band 6 nurses providing the out of hours acute oncology service and signing off competencies.
Education and training of staff to ensure robust pathways of care.
Practice and service development encompassing audit, research, innovation and evaluation.
To work collaboratively, using specialist knowledge and skills, to help develop and deliver services across organisational, professional and geographical boundaries.
To work with the acute oncology team in developing referral criteria, pathways of care, protocols and guidelines to support the development of the service.
To support cancer of unknown primary (CUP) patients being admitted to the trust in an emergency.

Clinical Professional Duties
Act as an advocate for the patient at all times, ensuring a person-centred approach in overseeing the patients treatment and investigation pathway, ensuring that it is seamless and well communicated to all parties, including the patients.
To act as an expert practitioner to provide direct, specialised care including interventions and advice to patients within the acute oncology service and multi-disciplinary speciality teams demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment of individual patients
Undertake telephone and face to face emergency assessment and instigate appropriate management of patients presenting acutely unwell to the Trust.
Responsible for escalating appropriate and timely consultation and / or referral when beyond the level of the post holder expertise / knowledge.
To make an autonomous assessment surrounding complex health concerns or situations to enable the initiation of nursing care and interventions to support the patients healthcare needs.
To utilise high level, advanced communication skills.
To use highly specialist nursing skills to assess the patients physical, emotional and social needs.
Consider the safeguarding needs of vulnerable patients e.g. those with cognitive impairment or disability.
To act as a patients advocate, ensuring the patient and carer are fully informed and understand the proposed care pathway and interventions therefore enabling patients to make informed decisions.
Ensuring that consent to treatment is established prior to any interventions when appropriate.
To act as an expert practitioner/coordinator for suspected Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression patients.
To provide a resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
As an Independent Nurse Prescriber commence medications where clinically appropriate within
scope of expertise based on a robust assessment of patients condition.
Monitor and evaluate the patients response to treatment and advise nursing and other healthcare professionals on the revised care strategies to improve effectiveness of care.
Manage caseload independently, prioritising appropriately and ensuring resources are used cost effectively.
To ensure all information given and interventions recommended are evidence based and up to date.
To refer to appropriate social or health care agencies as required.
To have contact with patients and their relatives, who may be highly distressed and anxious, and to use advanced communication skills to provide supportive listening and assess psychological needs, providing practical and emotional support.
Liaise with the nursing and allied health professionals in clinical departments as they move between care settings along the patient pathway e.g. during treatment or admission.
Always ensure the maintenance of professional contemporaneous records, document all actions and interventions in a clear and honest and timely manner in line with Trust policy.
Deal with concerns raised by patients and visitors in a proactive manner, review patient feedback results and update the units patient experience improvement plans, as needed.
Ensure next of kin are informed of patients treatment and admission in line with Trust Information Governance requirements and assist with the arrangements for relatives to see medical staff and others as required.
Demonstrate expert knowledge by being visible and accessible in the Clinical area and using clinical skills as required.
Leadership and Management
Provide highly visible and accessible professional leadership and demonstrate expert knowledge and standards of clinical practice
The post holder has joint responsibility with the AOS Nurse Practitioners for the daily running of the acute oncology service (nursing) on within the Acute Trust.
The post holder will advise the Lead AOS Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) if competencies are not being maintained for an acute oncology training plan to be devised that complies with Cancer Peer Review Measures and Trust standards.
To evaluate existing services, identifying areas for improvement and in collaboration with the Lead
Clinician and AOS Lead Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) and assist with development of business cases for presentation to the directorate.
In collaboration with the Lead AOS (ANP), AOS Nurse Practitioners, Matron and the review and develop policies relating to Acute Oncology ensuring based upon current evidence base.
To ensure patients accessing the acute oncology service have access to Allied Health Care Professionals in a timely manner either through referral or access to urgent consultation.
To ensure the oncology alert system is maintained.
Ensure the acute oncology service and staff are aware of and comply with current policies.
Ensure effective and efficient utilisation of resources, managing resources to achieve maximum value for money without detriment to patient care.
Ensure the opinion of service users is sought and information gained is used to direct the service.
Educational
Working in partnership with the AOS Service Lead cute and Lead clinician to develop a trust education strategy for acute oncology coordinating the delivery of training with other members of the team.
Advise on training and competency requirements to meet the quality surveillance measure for the acute oncology team and MDTs.
To be the AOS team lead to sign off competencies to the AOS out of hours band 6 nurse team
To work in collaboration with the expert advisory groups to ensure trust education strategy for acute oncology reflects the regional strategy.
To deliver education and training regarding Acute Oncology to multi-professional staff.
To work across the Trust with lead nurses and professional development to ensure that appropriate educational programs are available to meet the requirements of national and trust standards.
Maintain individual professional development adhering to recognised local and national standards.
Maintains a programme of personal and professional development in light of evolving service changes by attending in-service training and utilising relevant educational opportunities. E.g. courses, conferences, seminars.
Access appropriate training courses for self and others to maintain and improve specialist knowledge and skills.
Effectively utilises informal education opportunities with patients, carers and professionals.
Provides formal education for staff on the AOS update day and other relevant study days both internally and externally to the trust as required.
Educates patients and their carers in the understanding of their illness, treatments and provides other sources of information, help and support.
Clinical Governance
To be actively involved in audit of outcomes relating to acute oncology.
In collaboration with the AOS team contribute to the body of knowledge and research in cancer nursing through publication and presentation on a local and national level.
Utilise systematic methods of enquiry to ensure own practice and development of others is always evidenced based.
To support developments in clinical practice, undertake audits to identify best practice and clinical service requirements.
Undertake in collaboration with the multi-professional team research projects in relation to specialist area to inform practice.
To maintain and promote evidence-based practice by participating in and disseminating research.
To take responsibility for the investigation of Incidents and complaints regarding the acute oncology service and providing an action plan and recommendations for service improvement.
Clinical and Professional Leadership
To work collaboratively with colleagues of all disciplines to review and develop services relating to Acute Oncology to meet the needs of the patients and comply with national guidance.
Maintain accountability and responsibility for autonomous practice in all areas of work ensuring all documentation meets the requirements of local and national standards.
To contribute to the peer review process and actively engage with developments to ensure compliance.
Adhere to all local and national standards and guidelines.
To co-ordinate a high-quality service for patients accessing the telephone point of contact ensuring care is delivered as close to home as is clinically appropriate.
Participate in risk assessments and managements of risk in collaboration with appropriate departments and health care professionals.
