This is an exciting opportunity for the appointee to work in a major NW London NHS trust, with areputation for educational excellence within a friendly and supportive culture!This post is based at Ealing Hospital theatres, which is one of three sites within our trust (NorthwickPark, Ealing and Central Middlesex Hospitals). Successful candidates will further their experiencein a range of surgical subspecialties, to include elective and emergency upper & lower generalsurgery, orthopaedics/trauma, gynaecology, endoscopy, and dental surgery. The upper GI servicehas recently expanded, providing increased capacity for surgery such as laparoscopiccholecystectomy and an upper GI hub is planned for the near future.
There is a dedicatedemergency/trauma theatre list 24/7, with weekday consultant cover. In addition, the departmentprovides an outreach service for ECT and for DC cardioversions in the Coronary Care Unit. Alsoincluded are potential opportunities to work at the Northwick Park Hospital site to broaden this casemix, to include major head & neck, vascular, obstetrics, urology and major colorectal surgery.
Main duties of the job
The post holder must:- Know when to ask for help, whom to ask for help, and not act beyond the level of his/her own competence. There is always an anaesthetic middle grade onsite and also a supervising consultant/duty consultant for guidance and assistance- Effect detailed hand-over at the end of a duty shift- In the event of a list cancellation or early finish, be available on site for possible reassignment to other lists.OBJECTIVESEnsure familiarity and compliance with:- Corporate policies and procedures (available for viewing on the Trust intranet)- Workplace policies and procedures- Quality improvement measures- Patient safety initiatives- Theater efficiency initiativesParticipate in:- Continuous professional development (CPD)- Clinical governance- Critical incident reporting- Mandatory in-house training- Teaching- Assessments appropriate to training/CPDLOCATION OF DUTIESDuties will be primarily based on Ealing and Northwick Park sites.The post holder should be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. Commitments arising in such circumstances are however exceptional and the post holder will not be required to undertake work of this kind forprolonged periods or on a regular basis. All efforts will be made to ensure that work of this kind does not result in continuous hours of duty which exceed the New Deal continuous hours of duty limits.

Education and Qualification Essential
oPrimary medical qualification acceptable to the GMC for registration (e.g. MBBS or equivalent) oFull GMC registration with a licence to practise by the date of commencement oEvidence of English-language competence meeting current GMC requirements, where applicable oCompletion of at least one year in an internship post oEvidence of good standing from any other medical regulatory authority with which the applicant is or has recently been registered, where applicable oInitial Assessment of Competence (IAC) or equivalent oBasic Life Support certification

Knowledge and Experience Essential
oA minimum of 6 months of anaesthetic training, undertaken within the last year oAppropriate knowledge, practical skills and attitude to independently assess and anaesthetise ASA 1-2 patients undergoing minor or moderate uncomplicated procedures, within the limits of competence and with senior support available oAbility to identify the high-risk patient preoperatively oAbility and attitude to recognise a deteriorating patient and when to call for help oWorking knowledge of, and familiarity with, commonly used anaesthetic equipment and drugs oFamiliarity with core national anaesthetic guidance, e.g. DAS guidelines for failed intubation
