About this role

Job summary

To act as a support role to the qualified audiologist where you will be expected to work under indirect supervision in order to undertake non-complex and routine aspects of the audiology service. This includes performing clinical skills in areas of hearing assessment and rehabilitation.

Performs and selects suitable routine & non-routine diagnostic tests following recommended procedure guidelines on adults ENT, wards and GPs and secondary referrals from other consultants. recording of patient sessions on the departments Management System.

To perform precise otoscopic examinations to recommended procedures able to identify abnormal and normal appearances of the ear.

To assess patients, to include ear examination, history taking, questionnaires. Communicating information in a sensitive manner ,developing a treatment plan.

Selecting appropriate hearing aids for individual patients

To perform verification tests to ensure best fit of hearing aid,

A high level of communication skill is needed were patients have barriers to understanding due to their level of hearing loss / poor speech discrimination. Occasionally working with mental handicapped / dementia patients and with patients who become distressed and emotional.

To assist the qualified staff with more complex hearing/balance tests on neonates and adults.

Responsible for ensuring that own work area is prepared for own caseload. Plan and prioritise own duties

Main duties of the job

Ensuring all equipment is in good working order and calibrated daily. Reports faults as to departmental policies.

Ensuring the correct outcome is achieved and secondary referrals to other professionals as required.

To provide rehabilitation, counselling, and training to new and existing hearing aid patients. patients will be hearing impaired but many will have complex communication needs and will need reassurance and persuasion in accepting their hearing loss / hearing aid and motivation.

follow up appointments and perform outcome measures in the form of questionnaires.

Hearing aid repairs and complex fine-tuning of hearing aids.

Take impressions of adult ears for hearing aid ear moulds following recommended procedures, Modifying ear moulds as required using specialist machinery which requires dexterity.

Dealing with enquiries from patients who have a hearing loss and who maybe angry / distressed, requiring time and patience.

Provide advice to staff in care homes and on wards in the management and care of hearing aids.

Participate in Continuing Professional Development and training to maintain competency.

Contributing to discussions on local service Complying at all times to Confidentiality, Health and Safety issues.

Responsible for safe use of complex equipment Responsible for maintaining adequate levels of stock for the department.

Provides training and clinical supervision of trainees within scope of the role.

Regularly assists with patient moving

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

5 subjects at GCSE grade C or above, including Maths, English and Science (or equivalent) 2 subjects at A level grade C or above, including a science subject (or equivalent) Diploma/Certificate in Audiology (or equivalent qualification) or willingness to undertake a one year course in the Certificate of Higher Education in basic Audiology Practice at the University of Leeds.

Experience of working with the general public/hard of hearing people.
