Main duties of the job Key Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with external agencies, including Local Authorities, MAPPA, CMHTs, Police, Probation, and Social Services.Build positive relationships with patients, identifying and addressing social care needs to support recovery and discharge planning.Provide support and guidance to families and carers of detained patients.Advise and support patients to access benefits and financial entitlements, acting as financial appointee where required.Lead on Mental Capacity Act assessments, best interest decision-making, and non-medical capacity issues within the multidisciplinary team.Lead and support safeguarding practice, including managing complex concerns, investigations, and delivering safeguarding training.Develop and maintain effective partnerships with local authority safeguarding teams.Contribute to Clinical Governance by monitoring and reporting on safeguarding and social care activity.Act as an Appropriate Adult for PACE interviews and related procedures when required.Ensure practice complies with relevant legislation, professional standards, and organisational policies.

Job description Job responsibilities Role Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join Waterloo Manor Hospital, Leeds, as our Social Work and Safeguarding Lead. Working within our low secure mental health services, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, person-centred social work practice to adults with learning disabilities and complex mental health needs who are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.

You will be responsible for assessing patients' social care needs in accordance with the NHS and Community Care Act 1990 (Section 47), the Care Programme Approach, and relevant legislation. Managing your own caseload, you will work autonomously while collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team to promote recovery, reduce barriers to discharge, and achieve the best possible outcomes for patients.

As the hospital's Safeguarding Lead, you will provide expert advice and leadership on safeguarding adults, supporting colleagues with complex safeguarding concerns, leading investigations where appropriate, and promoting best practice across the service. You will work in partnership with local authorities and external agencies to ensure patients receive safe, effective, and coordinated care.

Person Specification

Skills/Knowledge Essential

Sound Safeguarding Knowledge and appropriate qualification. Sound knowledge of Mental Health Act 1983. Sound knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act.

Experience Essential

Experience in working within a mental health setting.

Qualifications Essential

Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England
