About this role

The Preschool Teacher, under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, is responsible for planning and implementing a safe, nurturing, and engaging preschool program for children ages 3–5. The teacher will foster each child's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development while preparing them for a successful transition to kindergarten.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or certification in Early Childhood Education is preferred.

• Previous experience working with preschool-aged children.

• Ability to develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities.

• Strong communication and organizational skills.

• Ability to establish positive relationships with children, parents, and coworkers.

• Current First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe) preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan and implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans and daily activities.

• Prepare and organize classroom materials, supplies, and equipment.

• Create a safe, welcoming, and positive classroom environment.

• Supervise children at all times during program hours and maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios.

• Promote children's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development through play-based learning and structured activities.

• Encourage positive behavior using appropriate classroom management techniques.

• Communicate professionally with parents regarding children's progress, behavior, and daily activities.

• Maintain accurate attendance records and other required documentation.

• Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the classroom and learning materials.

• Follow all Midlothian Park District policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

• Attend required staff meetings, orientations, training sessions, and parent orientation events.

• Perform assigned duties safely while following all safety policies and procedures.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor.

• Work cooperatively as part of a team while also demonstrating initiative.

• Effectively communicate with supervisors, coworkers, parents, and children.

• Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to actively participate in classroom activities throughout the day.

• Ability to sit on the floor, kneel, bend, squat, reach, and stand for extended periods.

• Ability to walk frequently throughout the facility and outdoor play areas.

• Ability to lift, carry, or assist children and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Ability to read, write, and use basic technology for communication and record keeping.

Environmental Considerations

• Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

• May be exposed to common childhood illnesses.

• May be exposed to insects, including bees and mosquitoes.

• May be exposed to cleaning products and art materials used in preschool programming.

Cognitive and Safety Requirements

• Demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills.

• Exercise sound judgment and maintain awareness of children's safety at all times.

• Ability to multitask while supervising children in a dynamic environment.

• Recognize and respond appropriately to emergencies.

• Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and Park District information.

• Follow all state licensing requirements and Midlothian Park District policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
