About this role
Company Overview Function Health is the AI operating system for health, designed to empower people to live 100 healthy years. We are redefining how individuals understand, measure, and improve their health by moving beyond the limitations of traditional care and enabling comprehensive, continuous insight into human biology. Function has been recognized as one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies of 2024, and is venture-backed by Redpoint and other leading venture firms. Over half a million members have joined Function to take control of their health. Through comprehensive lab testing, MRI and CT imaging, longitudinal data, and guidance from AI and clinical teams, Function gives members a complete and continuous view of their health, and the clarity to act on it. Through acquisitions across imaging, mobile phlebotomy, and supplement tracking and optimization, Function is building an integrated health platform that spans the full path from testing to health clarity to daily action. Function recently announced a $298M Series B and is entering its next chapter of growth. We are growing our team and seeking talent that deeply believes in our mission to positively impact global health, has a relentless bias toward action, and a growth mindset. Function fosters a collaborative and dynamic environment where every day we build the future. Role We are seeking a curious, motivated Associate Software Engineer to join our engineering team at Function. You will help design, build, and ship software that gives our members access to their health data in real time. Function is a highly AI-native engineering environment: our engineers use AI tools every day to write, review, test, and debug code, and to move faster without lowering the bar on quality. You'll work closely with experienced engineers who will mentor you, review your code, and help you grow quickly, while you take on real, meaningful work from your first weeks. The ideal candidate is early in their engineering career, detail-oriented, eager to learn, and energized by a fast-paced environment. You are comfortable working with a variety of AI engineering workflows and see AI as a way to multiply your impact. This role is a great fit for someone who wants to build strong engineering fundamentals while contributing to a mission that matters. Key Responsibilities As an Associate Software Engineer at Function, you will: AI-Native Software Development: Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code for well-scoped features and bug fixes, using AI coding assistants and agentic workflows as part of your daily process. Learn our codebase and engineering standards, and contribute to scalable, secure systems under the guidance of senior engineers. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with teammates across engineering, product, design, and clinical teams to understand requirements, ask clarifying questions, and communicate progress and blockers clearly. Project Delivery: Own small to medium-sized tasks from start to finish, including planning, implementation, testing, code review, and deployment. Contribute to team projects that support Function's strategic goals. Technical Problem Solving: Debug and resolve technical issues with support from your team. Break down problems into manageable pieces, and learn to investigate root causes using logs, monitoring, testing, and AI-assisted analysis. Quality and Engineering Practices: Participate in code reviews, write unit and integration tests, and follow our CI/CD, Agile, and documentation practices. Critically review AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability before it ships, and take ownership of everything you commit. Help keep our data accurate and our systems reliable. AI Workflow Fluency: Learn and share effective ways of working with AI, such as prompting, providing context, using coding agents, and automating repetitive tasks. Help the team improve how we build with AI. Learning and Growth: Stay curious about new technologies and approaches. Seek feedback, take on stretch work, and apply what you learn to improve our platform. Qualifications / Skills Required Experience: 1-2 years of professional software engineering experience (internships and co-ops included) Education: Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or Applied Mathematics. Programming Fundamentals: Working proficiency in Python (or a comparable language such as Java, TypeScript, or Go), plus a solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design. You understand the code you ship, whether you or an AI wrote it. AI-Native Mindset: Comfort working with a variety of AI engineering workflows, such as AI coding assistants, agentic tools, and LLM-assisted debugging, testing, and code review. You know how to get good results from these tools and how to verify their output. Engineering Basics: Familiarity with version control (Git), testing practices, and APIs and web services. Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills and a knack for breaking down unfamiliar problems. Communication and Collaboration: Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working in a remote, distributed team. Commitment to Learning: A growth mindset. You welcome feedback, ask good questions, and question assumptions, including the AI's. Mission Alignment: Interest in using technology to improve healthcare and help people manage their health. Nice to Have Hands-on experience with tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, or with building LLM-powered features. Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS or Google Cloud) and containerization (Docker). Familiarity with Agile methodologies, test-driven development, or CI/CD pipelines. Experience with SQL or relational databases. Prior internship or project experience in healthcare, health data, or a startup environment. To be a strong fit, you embody our Core Values Ruthless Prioritization: We don't let perfect get in the way of progress. We move quickly to drive value, not perfection. We prioritize what drives impact. We never compromise on standards of excellence. Member-First, Always: We design and deliver like we're caring for someone we love. We create clear, actionable, human experiences. We prioritize responsiveness, peace of mind, and outcomes. We empower members with truth, clarity, and care. One Team, Moving Fast: We are aligned in purpose, prioritization, and speed. We gather diverse perspectives to make informed decisions. We clear paths for each other and move fast together. We communicate clearly and respectfully, rallying around shared goals. Radical Ownership, Relentless Execution: We don't just ship, we own outcomes and drive results. We act with urgency and precision. We anticipate, initiate, and follow through. We meet challenges with grit and pragmatism. We embrace new tech to deliver better outcomes. Mission Over Ego: We are ruthlessly aligned to our mission and leave ego at the door. We disagree and commit. We don't tolerate politics or withholding information. We operate with honesty, transparency, and respect. Sustained Integrity in Every Detail: We earn trust by obsessing over accuracy, quality, and clarity in everything we do. We prioritize clinical precision: data must be right. We sweat the details because outcomes depend on them. Why You'll Love Working With Us We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, flexible working hours, and a dynamic environment where creativity and innovation are encouraged. As an Associate Software Engineer, you'll get hands-on mentorship, real ownership of meaningful work, access to modern AI tooling, and a clear path to grow your career as Function scales. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender identity, ancestry, religion, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, marital status, Veteran status, or any other occupationally irrelevant criteria.
