Full Time Fixed Term - 12 months
We are looking for an enthusiastic junior doctor to join our dynamic team as a Trust Grade doctor in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine at Newham University Hospital for a fixed period from 5 August 2026 until 3 August 2027. This is an innovative, full-time post designed for doctors who are at ST3+/senior SHO/registrar level as a developmental opportunity prior to taking up a higher specialty physician training post. It is designed for doctors who will have completed internal medicine training (IMT) (or its equivalent). The post holder would be given the same training and on-call opportunities as the other Specialist Registrars (SpRs) on the North Central and East London (NCEL) gastroenterology rotation program, who are working in this hospital.
The successful applicant will contribute to the acute General Medical service at Newham University Hospital (NUH). This involves full commitment to the general medical on call rota on a 1:8 frequency with prospective cover (ST3+ level). They will participate in the acute management of gastroenterology and hepatology inpatients.
Main duties of the job
Clerking patients on the acute medical during the daytime, weekends and at night as part of the on-call team
Leading or participating in daily ward rounds
Identify and appropriately manage clinical problems
Prescribe safely
Keep an accurate and relevant medical record
Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
Act in a professional manner at all times
Manage ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems
Educate patients effectively
Become life-long learners and teachers
Be part of the cardiac arrest team when on-call
The post holder will participate in one consultant supervised general gastroenterology outpatient clinic per week.
There is also a consultant/nurse endoscopist supervised endoscopy list every week that the post holder would be expected to attend (if they wish).

Experience Essential
Experience working as a doctor in the UK NHS system within a secondary care Hospital General medicine experience
Desirable
Gastroenterology inpatient experience
Skills Essential
Medical knowledge commensurate with grade Competent at venesection, cannulation, ABG, ECG interpretation, and CXR interpretation Recognition of the sick patient and early management.

Skilled at practical procedures eg central line, ascitic / pleural tap
Knowledge/ Expertise in Specialty/Sub-Specialty Essential
Good basic general medical knowledge Demonstrable experience in teaching and other aspects of education Previous experience at registrar or senior SHO/IMT1-2 level in the UK.

At least 4 months' experience in gastroenterology or hepatology at IMT level or equivalent Experience with upper /lower GI endoscopy
Qualifications Essential
MBBS or equivalent MRCP (UK) or equivalent ALS certification

Intercalated BSc or equivalent Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where research thesis not part of first medical degree)
