We are seeking a professional, organised and customer-focused Receptionist to provide comprehensive administrative and clerical support across the Emergency Department (ED) and Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC).

As the first point of contact for patients, relatives, ambulance crews and healthcare professionals, you will help ensure the smooth running of these busy services. Duties include registering, admitting, transferring and discharging patients, maintaining accurate electronic records, processing referrals, coordinating documentation and supporting patient flow while adhering to confidentiality and data quality standards.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, providing responsive administrative support that contributes to safe, effective and person-centred care. The role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to remain calm, professional and compassionate when dealing with patients and families, including those in distressing situations.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for registering and booking walk-in patients and emergency ambulance admissions, ensuring accurate patient details and preventing duplicate registrations. Record information in line with Trust policies and manage admissions, transfers and discharges (ATD) on Lorenzo for Clinical Decision Unit patients. Create emergency registrations and ward referrals when required.

Provide a professional, friendly and confidential service, responding to enquiries in accordance with Data Protection requirements. Request and track patient records using the Patient Administration System and Patient Document Tracking (PDT), and accurately process, scan and distribute ED and UTC documentation, referrals and follow-up paperwork.

Maintain patient safety through compliance with infection prevention and control policies and completion of mandatory training. Participate in staff meetings, appraisals, training and service improvement activities.

Support the induction and training of new team members. Build positive relationships with patients, relatives, colleagues and external partners through effective communication. Provide compassionate support, manage complaints appropriately, and work consistently within Trust policies, procedures and standards.

Education, Qualifications and Training Essential

GCSE English & Maths Grade C or above Computer literate

Experience Essential
