Job overview: We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our forward-thinking surgical team as a Consultant Laparoscopic General Surgeon with a specialist interest in Upper GI surgery.

This is a dual-site post:

Base and emergency on-call at Glangwili General Hospital Elective surgical activity at Withybush General Hospital, home to a JAG-accredited Endoscopy Unit We are seeking a motivated, dynamic consultant who enjoys working in a supportive rural district general hospital setting, delivering high-quality care across a broad range of general surgical conditions.

There is one permanent post available, offered under the Consultant Contract (Wales) with an optional 10-session (37.5 hours) working week.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

o Deliver safe, high-quality clinical care across General Surgery, with a focus on Upper GI and laparoscopic surgeryo Participate in the emergency general surgery on-call rota (1:8)o Undertake elective procedures at Withybush General Hospital, including within a JAG-accredited endoscopy serviceo Provide clinical leadership and supervision to junior medical staffo Contribute to a multidisciplinary team environment, supporting service development and innovationo Support delivery of RTT and Standard Cancer Pathway (SCP) targetso Engage in teaching, training and educational supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate learnerso Participate in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiativeso Work collaboratively with primary care and community teams to enhance patient pathwayso Maintain continuing professional development and revalidation requirements

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge Essential

Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council. On the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or will have CCT due within six months of interview date. Valid Certified Advanced Life Support. Where a sub-specialty interest is required sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice - fellowship or equivalent level experience.

Additional Higher qualification(s).

Clinical Experience Essential

Broad based experience within the specialty area. Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post. Experience of leading a team.

Desirable

Previous experience working in the UK or NHS.

Research and Scholarship Essential

Demonstrates knowledge of current research and best practice in the specialty area. Evidence of keeping up to date with current research and best practice. Evidence of locating and using clinical guidelines appropriately. Evidence of communicating and interpreting research evidence in a meaningful way

Desirable

Active participation in research.

Clinical Governance Essential

Understanding of the role of Clinical Governance. Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice. Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process.

Desirable

Knowledge of risk management.

Safeguarding Essential

Demonstrates knowledge of safeguarding requirements and takes appropriate responsibility. Evidence of applying appropriate equality and diversity legislation.
