Job summary
Are you an experienced registered nurse with a passion for improving the care of patients experiencing acute and complex pain? We have an opportunity to join the Acute Pain Service at South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust as a Band 6 Nurse Specialist.
This is a predominantly clinical role, with at least 80% of your time focused on supporting and managing a specialist caseload. Working closely with anaesthetists, surgeons, ward teams, pharmacy and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will help deliver safe, evidence-based and compassionate pain management across the organisation.
The post offers a varied mix of direct patient care, specialist advice, education, clinical leadership, audit and service improvement. You will assess and review patients receiving complex pain-management interventions, including patient-controlled analgesia, epidural analgesia, local anaesthetic infusions and regional anaesthetic techniques, while supporting patients and colleagues to achieve the best possible outcomes.
You will join a supportive specialist team and have the opportunity to develop your expertise while contributing to the continued development of acute pain services, specialist clinics and education across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
A clinical expert and leader, working autonomously as a member of the multi-professional team toprovidespecialist advice and is accountable for service delivery across the Trust. Able to make informed decisions within their own specialty and scope of professional practice, involving patients and public to ensure agreed standards and targets are met.
The post holder will have advanced knowledge in caring for the patients with Acute Pain andbe responsible forthe assessment and management of them. They will provide direct patient management through health assessment, initiation of treatment and alteration of treatment plans. The post holder willinitiateand participate in audit and research projects relating to the Acute Pain service. They willfacilitatethe development of clinical practice through education of the multi-disciplinary team. They will be a specialist resource for other healthcare practitioners and ensure the highest standards of clinical care. The post holder will have managerial and leadership responsibility for the Acute pain service.

Independently runoutpatientsclinic to provide treatment and support to patientsregardingcapsaicin treatment and other therapies according to service demand
Communicatehighly sensitiveand emotional condition related information to patients and relatives re: difficult pain management issues, terminal illness, bereavement.
Act as patient advocate and educate patients with regards to treatment and lifestyle.Negotiate treatment options with surgeons, medical and anaesthetic team to agree a pathway of care.
Ensure that the role provides a visible and identifiable presence within the clinical area and is accessible to patients,staffand visitors.Act as a role model for excellence of nursing care and management.
Education and Training
Lead in the identification and provision of specialist education and competency-based training to the multi-professional team across the Trust.
Leadin competency-based training and assessments, within pain management and postoperative care.
Provide support to agreed programmes of education at the Trust.
Maintain and update evidence-based knowledge and skills
Take responsibility for own personal and professional developmentmaintainingan up-to-date professional portfolio.

Governance
Review and update guidelines,policiesand protocols to support reduced risk and safe delivery of specialised analgesia such as epidural or patient-controlled analgesia.
Evaluate the literatureto implement evidence-based pain management strategies including valid reliable pain assessment tools
Liaise with electro medical technicians to support maintenance of pain management equipment to reduce clinical risks
Investigate and takeappropriate actionsrelating to untoward incidents/ accidents and complaints reporting to relevant personnel,managersand directors asappropriate.
Monitor and record activity ensuring acute pain service is fit for purpose and provides a service in line with national guidance.
Research and Audit
Lead the co-ordination of clinical audit and research in the department. Actively undertake audit and research and present anddisseminateresults across the Trust ensuring that findings are applied to local practice whereappropriate.
