Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Foot & Ankle Orthopaedic Surgery within the Trauma & Orthopaedics Directorate at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy and progressive Trauma & Orthopaedic Department delivering high-quality elective and trauma care across the Trust. The successful candidate will work closely with the Foot & Ankle Consultant team to provide specialist assessment, treatment and follow-up of patients with a broad range of foot and ankle disorders.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will undertake outpatient clinics, fracture clinics, elective operating sessions, trauma theatre lists, ward care and participation in the departmental trauma rota. The successful applicant will contribute to service development, teaching, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities.
A strong interest and demonstrable experience in the management of diabetic foot pathology is essential. The successful candidate will have experience in the assessment and treatment of diabetic foot ulceration, Charcot neuroarthropathy, diabetic foot infection and limb preservation strategies. They will work closely with the multidisciplinary diabetic foot team, including diabetes physicians, vascular surgeons, podiatrists, specialist nurses and allied health professionals, to provide high-quality, evidence-based care for patients with complex diabetic foot conditions.

The post holder will:
Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with elective and traumatic foot and ankle conditions.
Conduct Foot & Ankle outpatient clinics independently.
Participate in fracture clinics and virtual fracture clinic services.
Undertake elective Foot & Ankle surgical procedures appropriate to their experience and competence.
Participate in trauma operating lists and management of acute foot and ankle injuries.
Contribute to inpatient care, ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
Support delivery of elective recovery and RTT targets.
Participate in the departmental trauma and on-call rota.
Maintain accurate clinical records and correspondence.
Contribute to service development and pathway redesign within Foot & Ankle Surgery.
The post holder will:
Participate in specialist diabetic foot clinics and multidisciplinary diabetic foot MDT meetings.
Assess and manage patients with diabetic foot ulceration, diabetic foot infection, Charcot neuroarthropathy and other complex diabetic foot conditions.
Work collaboratively with diabetes, vascular surgery, podiatry, microbiology and tissue viability services to optimise patient outcomes.
Support limb preservation pathways and contribute to reducing avoidable major amputations.
Contribute to the development and delivery of diabetic foot services across North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.
Participate in audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives relating to diabetic foot care.
The post holder will:
Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
Participate actively in the teaching, supervision and training of Foundation Doctors, Core Surgical Trainees, Internal Medicine Trainees, Specialty Registrars and Clinical Fellows.
Provide clinical supervision and operative training for orthopaedic trainees in outpatient clinics, on the wards and in theatre.
Support the development of operative skills, clinical judgement and professional development of orthopaedic trainees.
Participate in workplace-based assessments and provide constructive feedback to trainees.
Contribute to departmental teaching programmes, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality meetings and educational events.
Contribute to undergraduate teaching for medical students attached to the department.
Promote a positive educational environment within the Trauma & Orthopaedic Directorate.
Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
Engage in research activities where appropriate and contribute to presentations and publications.

Qualifications Essential
MBBS or equivalent qualification Full GMC registration with Licence to Practice MRCS or equivalent Minimum of six years post graduate experience in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Evidence of continuing professional development
Experience Essential
Significant experience in elective Foot & Ankle Orthopaedic surgery Senior Foot & Ankle surgical training with experience managing a broad range of elective and trauma Foot & Ankle conditions Experience in the management of orthopaedic trauma Independent experience running Foot & Ankle outpatient clinics Significant experience in the assessment and management of diabetic foot conditions Experience of working within a multidisciplinary diabetic foot service Experience participating in clinical audit and quality improvement Experience teaching, supervising and training orthopaedic trainees and junior medical staff
