NHFT is contracted to provide health care services to HMP Littlehey. Currently we are looking to recruit an innovative band 6 Primary care sister/Charge nurse to our team.The candidate will deliver the highest standard of care required to meet the diverse and complex healthcare needs of an adult male population. They will be passionate about all aspects of Nursing, have exceptional clinical skills demonstrating exemplary standards of care and professionalism.
HMP Littlehey is a Category C prison located in the picturesque village of Perry near to Grafham Water in Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire with free parking, staff restaurant and an onsite gymnasium. Healthcare services are delivered from two modern well equipped healthcare centers by a multi-disciplinary team who in the past, won the prestigious WHO European Best Practice in Prisons Award. The Primary Care Sister/Charge Nurse will work autonomously on a daily basis, managing clinical and non-clinical work without direct clinical supervision. The post holder will deliver wide ranging care within NMC/local and national NHS and Prison Service policy and guidance.

Job description Job responsibilities
To be a Senior Clinician for custodial healthcare within the establishment, providing expert level advice on prisoner healthcare and their management/needs both within the healthcare arena and also to non-clinical staff of all disciplines across the local establishment.
Respond to medical emergencies as emergency first responder, coordinating care and providing clinical leadership whilst delivering pre-hospital clinical care of a high standard to prisoners. To provide medical support/advice to the establishment when prisoners are relocated under control and restraint.
To administer medication in accordance with NMC guidelines. To contribute extensively to the risk assessments of the in-possession policy in collaboration with the Pharmacy Team.
To be professionally accountable for individual practice, working within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. To maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical records on the clinical IT system, in accordance with NMC guidance. To provide statistical reports on clinical activity as required.
To employ advanced clinical decision making and triage skills in deciding which clinical pathway fits the needs of the prisoners at first contact. To ensure that prisoners who require emergency transfer are assessed using the Medical Early Warning Score, appropriately stabilized and that a comprehensive handover is given to paramedics. To play an extensive role in identifying prisoners who require type 3 healthcare and to liaise with colleagues from other establishments to expedite transfer.
To carry out direct wide ranging evidence based clinical care to the highest professional standards. To undertake enhanced clinical practice (following training).
To work autonomously in nurse-led clinics in areas such as Diabetes, Asthma, IHD and Well Man. This requires extensive clinical knowledge, not only within specialist areas, but how this integrates/effects other conditions/illnesses.
To act as a nominated Clinical Lead within areas of chronic disease management. The post holder will carry out direct responsibility for clinical care, policy formulation, development and evaluation. There will be an extensive input, in collaboration with the Clinical Services Manager and medical services GP Lead, into the strategic direction of chronic disease management.
To carry out detailed healthcare assessments at reception to the prison, offering extensive advice as required to prisoners. This requires high level clinical decision making skills in ensuring a seamless transition of care.
To extensively participate in clinical audit projects, prison service audit projects and staff and prisoner surveys in consultation with NHS colleagues.
To play a role in the assessment of all risks (including Health and Safety) to the healthcare systems, processes and environment and contribute to the delivery of a robust clinical governance framework.
