Salary: £80,000 - 90,000 per year
Requirements: We are looking for a career that began in hands-on software development and progressed into architecture or technical leadership.We need strong commercial development experience in C, C++ and C#, with exposure to Python, .NET, Java or SQL welcomed.We need experience architecting software that controls physical hardware and interacts with electronics, sensors and mechanics.We need demonstrable experience operating as a software architect or technical authority within a complex, multi-site organisation.We need the ability to influence, persuade and align global teams without direct line authority.We need domain depth in at least one of the following: application software, industrial automation, networking protocols, UI frameworks, IoT and cloud development, AI and machine learning systems, cyber security, or embedded systems.We strongly prefer experience working across European, Asian and North American teams, with an understanding of different working and communication styles.We strongly prefer time spent living or working abroad.We strongly prefer background in industrial automation, medical devices, robotics, defence or another regulated hardware-led sector. Responsibilities: We will have you get under the bonnet of two mature software architectures, mapping how they are built, why they were built that way, and where the structural risks and opportunities sit.We will have you define the technical vision and roadmap for the next generation software platform, aligned to our commercial differentiation strategy.We will have you design layered architectures that allow multiple teams in multiple countries to iterate quickly without conflict.We will have you produce system architectures and high-level product specifications for robust, scalable and secure solutions.We will have you line manage a small UK software team initially, with responsibility for the German software team expected to expand over time.We will have you act as the technical bridge into our Asia-based R&D function, particularly around AI-driven feature development.We will have you work across the full lifecycle from early system definition through design, development, deployment and production support.We will have you hold developers to account on implementation quality, challenge approaches and mentor where needed.We will have you operate within an established Agile framework such as SAFe or Scrum. We are a global manufacturer of advanced precision machinery used in demanding, highly regulated production environments worldwide. Our Royston site is the global design authority for the product line, supported by manufacturing operations in the United States and China, and R&D teams in the UK, Germany and Asia. This is a site-based role in Royston with flexibility, and we expect less than 20% travel, including regular trips to Germany and approximately quarterly visits to Asia.
