Job summary
The Oral and Maxillofacial (OMF) team are looking to recruit a Trust Grade doctor to join our team.
This is a 12-month fixed term position starting as soon as possible.
We are looking for a passionate and dynamic individual looking to expand their skills and knowledge in OMF surgery. This post is ideal for either a medically or dentally qualified resident doctor who is looking to advance their career in OMF surgery. This could also be an opportunity for a dually qualified doctor prior to ST entry training in OMF surgery. We would expect a dental graduate to have at least two years of oral maxillofacial experience at DCT/SHO level and a medical only graduate to have finished F1 and F2 training.
The key roles of the post holder will be to participate in outpatient clinics, inpatient care, emergency referrals, ward rounds and operating theatre sessions, with appropriate supervision according to experience. They will also contribute to the on-call rota for emergency OMFS services and will have opportunities to develop clinical, surgical and professional skills.
Whilst the posts available do not form part of the formal training programme, we endeavour to offer post holders the same training and educational opportunities as colleagues in training, including paid study leave. You will be provided with clinical and educational supervision, to enable your personal and portfolio development. There is also an active Postgraduate Medical Education Centre.
Main duties of the job
Assess, investigate and manage patients presenting with oral and maxillofacial conditions under appropriate senior supervision. Participate in the assessment and management of emergency referrals, including facial trauma, odontogenic infections and other acute OMFS presentations. Provide care for inpatients, including daily ward rounds, documentation and discharge planning. Attend and contribute to outpatient clinics and theatre lists. Assist with minor and major surgical procedures appropriate to the level of experience. Participate in the departmental on-call rota, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays where applicable. Work closely with consultants, specialty doctors, trainees, nursing staff and allied health professionals to deliver safe, high-quality patient care. Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive clinical records. Request and interpret appropriate investigations and prescribe safely in accordance with Trust policies. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team. Participate in departmental teaching, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities. Maintain professional standards in accordance with General Medical Council guidance and Trust policies. Undertake mandatory training and engage in continuing professional development. Carry out any other duties appropriate to the grade of the post as reasonably requested by the Clinical Lead or supervising consultant.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Medical or dental qualification recognised by the GMC. Full GMC/GDC registration with licence to practise at time of appointment. At least 12 months' postgraduate clinical experience.
Desirable
Previous Dental Core Training (DCT), Junior Clinical Fellow or equivalent surgical post. Additional Medical/Dental qualification (BDS/BChD). ALS certification.
Experience Essential
Ability to assess and manage acutely ill patients. Good history-taking, examination and clinical decision-making skills. Competence in common practical procedures including venepuncture and cannulation. Safe prescribing knowledge.
Desirable
Previous experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Experience in ENT, Plastic Surgery, Oral Surgery or Emergency Medicine. Experience assisting in theatre. Experience managing facial trauma and odontogenic infections. Interest in pursuing a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Teaching experience. Research experience, presentations or publications.
Communication Essential
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Professional attitude with good organisational and time-management skills.
Governance and improvement Essential
Commitment to patient safety and clinical governance. Participation in audit or quality improvement.
