We have a great opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join our team.

The successful applicant will need to be friendly, enthusiastic, willing to work as part of a team, be IT literate and have a desire to grow and succeed within the organisational structure.

Knowledge and experience in the following areas would be ideal, but full training can be provided for the right candidate

Venepuncture

Wound Care

Clip and suture removal

Long term condition annual reviews

ECGs

Diet and Lifestyle advice

Urinalysis

Blood pressure checks

B12 administration/Vaccinations

Assisting in GP clinics (Minor ops, coils and implants etc.

Main duties of the job

You will need to be willing to carry out further technical and clinical procedures following appropriate training and demonstrating competence. You will also need a full driving license as you will need to undertake home visits.

About us

VHG is a large GMS practice of around 26,000 patients in Rushcliffe, South Nottinghamshire. The practice formed in April 2020 from the merger of East Leake Medical Group and Keyworth Medical Practice, both of which have been rated outstanding by the CQC. VHG works across four sites, with our main sites in East Leake and Keyworth and branch surgeries in Ruddington and Sutton Bonington.

VHG has 10 GP partners working together with a wide range of health care professionals including salaried GPs, nurse practitioners, practice nurses, health care assistants, clinical pharmacists, first contact physiotherapists social prescribing link workers and care-coordinators. We are well supported by local community nursing and therapy teams, and we have a well-developed model of multidisciplinary working. We use SystmOne clinical system.

Healthcare Assistant (HCA)

Job Summary

The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) will work under the supervision and direction of the practice nursing team to provide high-quality, patient-centred care within the GP practice. The post holder will undertake a range of clinical and administrative duties, contributing to the smooth running of nursing services while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, confidentiality and professionalism.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

Undertake health assessments.

Measure and record blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, height and weight.

Calculate and record Body Mass Index (BMI).

Perform urinalysis and pregnancy testing.

Carry out venepuncture.

Perform ECG recordings.

Undertake simple wound care and dressing changes as delegated.

Remove sutures and clips following assessment and competency sign-off.

Carry out ear irrigation/microsuction where trained and in accordance with practice policy.

Perform new patient health checks.

Carry out health promotion and lifestyle advice, including smoking cessation support where appropriate.

Support chronic disease monitoring clinics.

Assist with vaccination and immunisation clinics where appropriate.

Undertake point-of-care testing in line with practice protocols.

Chaperone patients during clinical examinations when required.

Recognise and report any concerns regarding patient deterioration or safeguarding issues promptly.

Infection Prevention and Control

Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.

Clean and prepare clinical rooms between patients.

Sterilise and maintain equipment according to practice protocols.

Dispose of clinical waste safely and appropriately.

Report any infection control concerns to the relevant lead.

Administrative Duties

Accurately record all consultations and clinical activity within the clinical system.

Maintain accurate patient records.

Process specimens in accordance with practice procedures.

Monitor and maintain clinical stock levels.

Order supplies as directed.

Ensure equipment is maintained and report faults promptly.

Participate in recall programmes and health promotion initiatives.

Communication

Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team.

Provide reassurance and clear explanations to patients.

Maintain confidentiality in accordance with GDPR, the Data Protection Act and practice policies.

Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, reception staff and external healthcare professionals.

Professional Responsibilities

Work within the scope of competence and seek support when necessary.

Maintain professional standards at all times.

Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development.

Attend team meetings and clinical updates.

Maintain competency through regular training and assessment.

Comply with all practice policies and procedures.

Support the teaching and induction of new staff where appropriate.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience Essential

Experienced health care assistant Experience working in a healthcare setting. Competent in venepuncture. Experience taking routine observations. Understanding of confidentiality and information governance. Knowledge of infection prevention and control. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Good IT skills and ability to use clinical systems.

Personal Qualities Essential

Caring, compassionate and professional. Reliable and organised. Able to prioritise workload. Flexible and adaptable. Committed to continuous professional development.

Desirable

Previous experience working in General Practice. Experience using SystmOne. ECG competency. Ear irrigation or microsuction competency. Wound care experience. Knowledge of QOF and long-term condition monitoring. Smoking cessation training. Phlebotomy qualification (if not evidenced through experience).
