Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced qualified Paediatric Nurse who would be interested in joining the Paediatric Gastroenterology multi-disciplinary team, in the position of Clinical Nurse Specialist for Intestinal Failure at The Royal London Hospital. The Royal London Children's Hospital, is a specialist tertiary paediatric hospital with 109 inpatient beds and cots, serving a consistent cohort of both acute and complex long-term inpatients including a large caseload of children with intestinal failure.

As one of the Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist for intestinal failure you would be working with inpatients and outpatients and considered knowledgeable in the administration of PN and can work with a level of autonomy and decision making. You would be closely working alongside Doctors, Dietitians and other members of the Multi-disciplinary team to ensure that patients' growth and development is promoted effectively.

The post holder will be an advocate for children, young people, and their families/carers with nutritional needs, promoting child focused, family centred care and act as a resource for the Nutritional Support team. This will include supporting young adults and their family in the home environment. They will be the key coordinator for liaison with primary and secondary care.

There is also the opportunity to assist with service planning and further advance your knowledge in the field of PN administration.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities include helping to facilitate the safe and effective discharge of PN patients from the hospital environment to community; Troubleshooting central venous catheters, and other patient concerns at home and escalating appropriately; supporting the ward nurses manage children whilst inpatient, including parenteral nutrition administration. We need someone who is able to effectively communicate with team members, parents, and external professionals including schools, social care, and housing authorities.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

NMC RSCN/RN(child) Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development within the speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies.

Desirable

Possession of a relevant MSC (or in the process of obtaining or will undertake in the future

Experience Essential

Experience of working as a band 6 children's nurse with relevant experience. Experience of being involved in clinical audit and evaluation. Experience of practical management of patients requiring parenteral nutrition. Experience with central venous access devices, trouble shooting and teaching to staff and families.

Desirable

Experience of working as a Band 7 in a relevant post. Experience of providing multiprofessional teaching/education.

Knowledge Essential

Excellent specialty Knowledge Understanding of professional and current issues in children's nursing. Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues when caring for children, young people, and families with Intestinal Failure Awareness and support of Childrens Safeguarding policy and procedures. Awareness and understanding of equality, inclusion, and diversity.

Understanding of audit and research methodologies Handling clinical incidents and complaints
