Job summary

Applications are invited for the role of Consultant in Medical Virology at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), This is a full-time established post, the successful applicant will provide virology expertise and clinical leadership across transfusion/transplantation virology with a focus on blood donation and transfusion.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the Microbiology Services Clinical Team at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) based North London. The Microbiology Service Clinical Team is a small multidisciplinary team that works across the whole of NHSBT providing clinical advice, working closely with laboratory colleagues, and supporting and developing research. As this is a specialised area of work, NHSBT recognises that the candidate, whilst having skills applicable to the post, will not necessarily have expertise in this precise area of virology. The appointee will be offered a period of induction to familiarise themselves with the various aspects of NHSBT work and support to develop within the role.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Full and Specialist or General Practice registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview). Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT. FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification.

Experience Essential

Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the relevant speciality Clinical Governance and Clinical Audit experience Comprehensive knowledge of clinical aspects of virology to provide consultant level advice to scientific, medical, and nursing staff on investigations in clinical virology and on the clinical interpretation, public health advice based on diagnostic information in complex diagnostic situations Broad range of IT skills Knowledge of evidence-based practice Evidence of clinical risk management and of leadership and promotion of good Clinical Governance and of investigating issues arising Knowledge of resource management and procurement
