The research investigates how embodied, often implicit forms of artistic expertise, such as timing, sound imagination, gesture, phrasing, and improvisational decision-making, are transmitted within teaching practice. 'It's a messy process - and that's the point.'' Read the interview with musician and CvA teacher Reinier Baas Through lesson observations, teacher interviews, and artistic research methods, we map how this experiential artistic knowledge is translated into pedagogy and educational practice. Drawing on overarching themes such as improvisation, breathing, and informal or oral knowledge transmission, we work with teachers to explore how their expertise is manifested, developed, and shared within the everyday educational environment of the conservatoire. The project will culminate in the creation of a book publication that brings together these diverse forms of artistic knowledge, pedagogical reflection, and musical experience, making them visible and accessible to a wider audience both within and beyond arts education.
