We have an exciting opportunity to join the BEMS Outreach Vaccination team in a flexible, bank role supporting the vaccination of vulnerable people across B&NES, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW).
You will be part of a supportive, forward-thinking team delivering high-quality care, improving access to vaccination and helping to protect local communities.You will travel across BSW to visit people who are housebound, care home residents, community clinics, as well as community events and locations.
This is a varied and rewarding role, offering the opportunity to protect vulnerable people, work in a range of community settings, predominantly supporting seasonal vaccinations (COVID-19 and influenzas) but also the opportunity to support our wider Vaccination Outreach service, focussing on vaccination uptake across the lifespan.
We will provide training in vaccination, and this post could be suitable for newly qualified registered healthcare professionals.
Main duties of the job
As a registered health professional, you will undertake a varied role supporting the planning, preparation and delivery of a variety of vaccine services across BSW. Key duties include:
Travelling across BSW, delivering safe, welcoming and effective vaccination services for eligible adults across care homes, homes, community clinics and outreach settings. Using your clinical judgement to assess capacity to consent, confirm eligibility and administer vaccinations safely in line with Patient Group Directions and local policies. Safely administering vaccinations to eligible patients and supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the vaccination service. Working closely with colleagues, escalating concerns promptly and appropriately, contributing to a collaborative, safe and positive working environment. Build positive relationships patients, families, GPs, local authorities and partner organisations, using clear and compassionate communication. Help plan and run smooth vaccination sessions, including vaccine collection, cold chain management, stock control, clinic set-up and accurate documentation. Recognise and escalate clinical concerns, risks or incidents promptly, including responding safely in emergency situations such as anaphylaxis. BEMS is a B&NES based not-for-profit General Practice Federation.
We work across the community to provide high quality clinical services as well as supporting our members who include local GPs, Practice Managers, our staff, patients, and the public.
The Outreach Vaccination Team at BEMS are a small but dynamic team who undertake a variety of work across BSW. The team is based in Devizes, at the heart of BSW and travel around our area to reach the populations who need us. Many of our team have been with us more many years as we offer as much flexibility as we can, and we are now excited to be able to offer the chance to join our team.
Job description Job responsibilities
As a Vaccinator you will work as part of a team to provide a caring, quality service to patients during the delivery of vaccinations across the lifespan, primarily COVID-19 and Influenza vaccines, to the patient population defined within the outreach service. This primarily covers people who are housebound or reside in care homes, but it may include community events or other community locations. At all times you will work within your own competence and use your own judgement, knowledge and common sense in your day-to-day activities.
You will undertake activities such as clinical assessment, preparation and drawing up of the vaccine from multi-dose vials and post vaccine observation support. In particular, the post holder will be responsible for:
Conducting clinical assessments.
The review of complex medical histories and potential adverse reactions.
Preparation of the vaccine prior to administration.
Safe vaccination of patients across Banes, Swindon and Wiltshire in a variety of settings.
Ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up to date skills and adhering to evidence based policies and procedures.
Maintaining universal infection control procedures.
Providing a robust Make Every Contact Count (MECC) offer during all patient interactions.
Job Responsibilities
Independently manage a daily patient list and personal workload, as directed by the Clinical Managers.
Complete a minimum of 20 housebound patient visits per standard housebound shift.
Work independently and as part of a team, under supervision when required.
Communicate routine, complex and sensitive information to patients and/or their relatives/carers and colleagues.
Handle difficult conversations (sensitive, language barriers, hostile atmosphere) and convert complex technical information into easily to understand communication.
Conduct clinical assessments of patients prior to vaccination to confirm the patient meets the criteria for safe vaccination, including previous vaccinations, current health condition, assessment of medical history and allergies.
Assess each patients capacity to consent to vaccination, escalating to the Duty Manager on sift with any concerns. This could include discussing with the family, holders of a Lasting Power of Attorney and the Registered GP Practice. Vaccinations may also be given under a Best Interest Decision by the post holder.
Assess the patients readiness for vaccination and address any concerns the patient may have prior to vaccination.
Provide the patient with verbal and written advice about any potential adverse reaction and contra-indications.
If a vaccine is contraindicated, give a verbal explanation and advice when vaccination may be considered in the future.
Ensure the patient understands the vaccination implications and gain informed, verbal consent to proceed with vaccination.
When required, work in partnership with patients, relatives and carers to gain consent for vaccination, treating all with reassurance, empathy, professionalism and handling difficult conversations.
Appropriate preparation of a variety of vaccinations in use across the lifespan.
Administer vaccinations to patients who have consented and been assessed according to the relevant and valid legal framework, Patient Group Direction.
Record the clinical assessment and outcome on the electronic patient record or point of care system.
Provide all patients with appropriate MECC information and interventions as appropriate. Signpost to a variety of NHS and external organisations as required.
Adhere to the businesss clinical waste and sharps protocols when disposing of syringes and sharps.
Follow in house, local and national Infection Control guidelines including the use of PPE when required.
Responsible for safe use of equipment and resources, ensuring equipment is maintained and suitable for use.
Complete required local and NHSE documentation at the end of each vaccination session.
Assist with the monitoring of vaccine and other related stock.
Participate in clinical audits as required.
Undertake additional tasks as required within your general role as a vaccinator.

Use clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep the patients as safe as possible.
Ensure all NHS statutory & mandatory training is kept up to date. This includes Basic Life Support, Anaphylaxis, immunisation procedures and specific Covid-19 and Influenza vaccination training.
Follow local and national policies and protocols, seeking guidance from the Duty Manager if required.
Promote service uptake within the community.
Respond to queries and/or escalate to the Duty Manager when appropriate.
Knowledge and understanding of local and national cold chain procedures and the safe storage, administration and disposal of COVID-19 and Influenza vaccines.
Build and maintain relationships with other healthcare professionals and external bodies.
Participate in training programmes, performance reviews, and personal/professional development.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Registered Health Care Professional with the NMC, GPhC or HCPC. Completed NHS statutory and mandatory training required by employer. Commitment and willingness to undertake further training as required.

Experience Essential
Work within a clinical health care role in primary care or other community healthcare environment. Experience of using lT systems, including accessing medical records and Yellow Card reporting scheme. Ability to record, retrieve information and enter data on electronic patient record and point of care system. Work according to national or local protocols and legal frameworks for vaccination.
