We are seeking a skilled and motivated Children & Young Peoples ASD Assessor to join our growing Neurodevelopmental Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-quality, multidisciplinary autism assessment pathway, helping to deliver timely assessments, informed diagnostic decision-making and meaningful recommendations for children and young people.
You will work within a supportive multidisciplinary team, delivering assessments in line with NICE guidance and contributing to evidence-based diagnostic outcomes. The role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced clinicians within a strong governance framework while making a genuine difference to local families.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will:
Deliver high-quality autism assessments for children and young people in line with NICE guidance and service procedures.Gather and analyse information from multiple sources including families, schools and professionals.Conduct developmental history and clinical assessment appointments.Contribute to multidisciplinary diagnostic discussions and formulation of outcomes.Produce comprehensive, high-quality clinical reports within agreed timescales.Communicate assessment outcomes sensitively and effectively to children, young people and their families.Identify safeguarding concerns and escalate appropriately through established governance processes.Provide advice, recommendations and signposting to support services following assessment.Participate in clinical supervision, audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives.Work collaboratively with colleagues across neurodevelopmental pathways to support excellent patient care and pathway efficiency.

As a CYP ASD Assessor, you will be responsible for:
Clinical AssessmentReviewing referrals and supporting information.Completing autism assessments using evidence-based approaches.Gathering multi-informant evidence across home and educational settings.Utilising validated assessment tools and questionnaires where required.Assessing developmental history, neurodevelopmental presentation and functional impact.Contributing to MDT diagnostic decision-making aligned with DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria.Identifying co-existing needs, risks and safeguarding concerns.Communication and ReportingProducing detailed, accurate diagnostic reports.Providing neurodiversity-affirming feedback to families.Communicating outcomes and recommendations clearly and professionally.Sharing assessment outcomes with GPs in line with consent and information governance requirements.Providing advice and signposting to appropriate support services.Governance and QualityMaintaining accurate clinical records and documentation.Working within safeguarding policies and clinical governance frameworks.Participating in supervision, reflective practice and mandatory training.Contributing to service evaluation, audit and quality improvement activities.Supporting safe and effective pathway delivery.Partnership WorkingWorking closely with operational teams to maintain pathway efficiency.Collaborating with MDT colleagues including nursing, psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and medical professionals.Liaising appropriately with education, health and community services to support patient care and onward planning.
Person Specification
Person Specification Essential
- Current professional registration with NMC or HCPC (or equivalent relevant regulator) in a nursing, psychology, SLT or other mental health role. - Significant post-qualification experience working with children and young people in neurodevelopmental, paediatric, CAMHS or closely related settings. - Direct experience delivering CYP ASD assessments within a diagnostic pathway. - Ability to integrate information from multiple sources into clear clinical reasoning and defensible conclusions aligned to DSM-5/ICD-11 diagnostic criteria within MDT governance. - Strong report-writing skills with evidence of producing high-quality clinical documentation to deadlines. - Sound understanding of safeguarding, risk identification and escalation within CYP services. - Confident MDT working and ability to follow governed diagnostic pathways and service SOPs. - Commitment to equality, reasonable adjustments and neurodiversity-affirming practice.
Desirable
- Experience using objective ASD assessment measures and validated questionnaires within a diagnostic pathway model. - Experience of coordinating assessment episodes (case coordinator approach) and delivering feedback appointments. - Experience working with dual presentation (ASD and ADHD) and navigating pathway interfaces safely. - Experience of audit, service improvement or documentation standards work in ND services. - ADOS-2 trained.
