Job summary

Pharmacy technicians play a very important role, complementing clinical pharmacists, community pharmacists and other members of the PCN multi-disciplinary team. The pharmacy technician will provide support to the network as a whole and each member practice as needed. The aim is to improve the quality of prescribing and patient outcomes across the network through high quality medicines review and optimisation.

Mereside Medical is a flourishing group of three East Cambridgeshire practices in Ely, Haddenham and Soham, together serving c.45,000 patients. Job description Job responsibilities

Based:Mereside Medical Practices (Cathedral Medical Centre, Haddenham Surgery, Staploe Medical Centre, Wilburton Office)

Basis:Permanent, Part-time up to 30 hours per week (FTE 37.5 hrs per week)

Salary:£32,715 per annum, pro rata for Part-time

The Role

The pharmacy technician will provide support to the network as a whole and each member practice as needed. The aim is to improve the quality of prescribing and patient outcomes across the network through high quality medicines review and optimisation.

Your Responsibilities

Medicines Management and Patient Support

Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and families to promote safe and effective medicines use Provide lifestyle advice and refer patients to other services when appropriate Conduct medicines reconciliation, handle medication queries, and ensure continuity of care across settings Perform technical medication reviews, support Structured Medication Reviews (SMRs), and assist with administration such as inhaler technique and compliance aids Support care home residents with reconciliation, synchronisation, safety training, and medication changes.

Medication Reviews

Level 1 - technical review of prescription - such as tidying up repeats, synchronisation, checking compliance and understanding, identifying patient concerns, looking for interactions. (This would usually lead to a more targeted review by the clinical pharmacist).

Clinical and Operational Support

Implement and monitor electronic repeat dispensing and shared care protocols Support antimicrobial stewardship and evidence-based prescribing Assist in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and large-scale medication switches or formulary updates Promote prescribing efficiency, safety, and best practice across the Primary Care Network (PCN) Supervise prescription processing, improve medicines optimisation, and help meet QOF, DES, and CQC targets.

Communication and Collaboration

Liaise with GPs, pharmacists, nurses, and local pharmacies to resolve medication issues and ensure safe transitions of care Maintain professional and sensitive communication with patients, considering accessibility and consent Contribute to shared learning and consistency across PCN practices.

Audit, Records and Compliance

Maintain accurate clinical records on SystmOne Support audits, data collection, and performance reporting Uphold confidentiality, data protection, safeguarding, and infection control standards.

Learning and Development

Maintain GPhC registration and CPD portfolio Engage in supervision, appraisal, and quality improvement activities Participate in staff training, clinical governance, and multidisciplinary education sessions.

Medicines Management and Patient Support

Follow policies and procedures, manage workload effectively, and report incidents or complaints promptly Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of work. Adhere to health and safety standards and uphold the professional image of the PCN.

You should have or be:

GCSEs in Maths and English (Grade C or above) GPhC registration Strong communication, organisation, and IT skills Experience managing patient medication and using clinical systems (e.g. SystmOne) Resilience, teamwork, and self-motivation Enhanced DBS, satisfactory references, and ability to travel locally.

It would be an advantage if you also:

> 3 years primary care experience Further qualifications/training Full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle.
