About this role

Job summary An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated General Practice Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team at The Morris House Group Practice.The post holder will support clinicians by processing clinical correspondence, blood test results, Docman documents and other workflow tasks. The role is designed to reduce avoidable clinical administrative burden, improve the quality of the patient record, and ensure that actions from hospital letters, out-of-hours contacts, 111 reports, investigations and other clinical documents are identified and directed appropriately.

This role would suit someone who is organised, accurate, confident using clinical systems, and able to work safely within protocols. The successful candidate will need to recognise the limits of their role and escalate anything uncertain or clinically significant to the appropriate clinician.

Main duties of the job Process incoming clinical documents in Docman and EMIS Workflow Manager.Extract and code relevant diagnoses, procedures, investigations, vaccinations and other clinically important information.Identify actions requested in clinical correspondence and forward these to the appropriate clinician or team.Process straightforward blood test results in line with practice protocol and escalate abnormal, unclear or high-risk results.Review hospital letters, discharge summaries, 111 reports, out-of-hours reports and external provider documents.Check whether requested actions have already been completed, including referrals, blood tests, fit notes or follow-up appointments.Arrange appointments, investigations, referrals or follow-up tasks where directed.Support clinicians with administrative tasks arising from consultations.Assist with QOF, long-term condition recall work, audits and practice improvement projects.Maintain accurate patient records using appropriate SNOMED coding and clear free text where needed.Communicate effectively with clinicians, administrative colleagues and patients.

Work within agreed protocols and escalate uncertainty rather than filing or actioning documents outside competence.

About us

Morris House is situated in Tottenham in a large, modern and airy purpose-built medical centre, which we share with district nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologists, tissue-viability nurses and a sexual health clinic. Our list size is 15,000 patients. Our patients represent highly diverse populations with a high level of deprivation.

Our practice has a very strong teaching ethos. We train GP registrars, medical students, physicians associates and junior doctors among others. We have close links with Kings College London and the St Georges Physician Associate teaching program. We also have an active Covid vaccination service, having given over 170,000 immunisations so far. We have also organised vaccination events at Hotspur Football stadium and local mosques and community centres. Our award-winning vaccination service has been visited by the prime minister and the Royal Family as well as various MPs and the mayor of London. We perform the full range of clinical roles that you would expect in primary care, including high-level minor surgery. We offer a range of face-to-face and telephone appointments.

We also have a friendly, interactive practice. We support our staff with study leave allowance, study leave funding, regular meetings, morning coffee, teaching and social events.

We were awarded a Good in our last CQC inspection. We have high QOF achievement and work proactively with our PCN and Federation colleagues across the borough.

Person Specification

Qualifications Desirable

BSc Biomedical Sciences or Similar

Experience Essential

Experience working in general practice or a healthcare administrative role. Confident using EMIS Web, Docman or equivalent clinical systems. Excellent attention to detail. Able to follow protocols and recognise when to ask for help. Good written and verbal communication skills. Able to manage workload and prioritise safely. Understanding of confidentiality and patient data protection. Willingness to undertake training and competency assessment including the GPA course.

Desirable

Previous GPA experience. Experience processing Docman documents and lab results. Experience with SNOMED coding. Understanding of QOF, long-term condition recalls or primary care workflow. Basic clinical skills, such as blood pressure checks, ECGs, phlebotomy or urine testing, where appropriately trained.
