Job summary
We have a vacancy for a Band 8b clinical or counselling psychologist specialising in Oncology for 15 hours per week.
We are looking for someone with experience of delivering clinical psychology assessments, interventions and supervision of other professionals within the specialism of oncology. You will need to be familiar with working in an MDT. The Trust is supportive of flexible working arrangements to meet the requirements of both staff members and the service. We are continuing to use a blended approach of face-to-face and on-line work.
Main duties of the job
You will join a friendly and supportive team that is well-respected and valued both within and from outside of the Trust. Learning and supervision are valued. Staff are supported to undertake training in different therapeutic approaches, as well as leadership development. Journal clubs and safeguarding supervision take place regularly.
The service is regularly involved in quality improvement projects. There are good links with the local DClin Psy course and the team are involved in supervising both placements and research as well as providing teaching.
Training, consultancy and supervision of non-psychologists also features within the varied workload and exciting new developments around supporting and developing integrated care through training and supervision within the care group are high on the agenda.

This role will incorporate highly complex psychological assessments leading to psychological formulations of distress; interpretation and opinion; and forming judgements to inform service provision and providing necessary psychological interventions. This will include the assessment and management of more complex presentations.
To be responsible for the clinical supervision, professional support and, where necessary, line management to less experienced psychologists and supervising and supporting the psychologically informed assessmentand therapy provided by other professionals. To include the provision of training placements for Psychologists in Training as required.
Responsibility for developing a specialist service provision will be expected, subject to consultation with the Clinical and operational Leads for the service.
Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING Essential
Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council and is eligible for registration as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist. Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS including two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by relevant professional body Post qualification training and/or supervised practice in oncology. Training in clinical supervision of psychological professionals, including trainees. Willingness to undertake further leadership development both formal and informal.
Desirable
Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice. Further training in psychological assessment, model or intervention specific to working in physical health settings. Leadership development qualification / training. Member of British Psychological Society
EXPERIENCE Essential
Experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist with a wide variety of client groups across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity within oncology across the full range of care settings, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse. Substantial experience of representing psychology within multi-disciplinary settings. Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and intervention Ability to work effectively within safeguarding procedures in the context of a therapeutic service. Experience of teaching, training and providing professional/clinical supervision to others (including qualified psychologists and other professionals) including use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings Experience of planning and implementing service developments in accordance with local and national policy objectives. Experience of employing a range of assessment methods, formal and informal, in physical health settings. Experience of supporting people with physical health problems, including experience of group work.
Desirable
Experience of professional leadership and/or management of qualified and pre-qualified applied psychologists and psychological therapists and/or multi-professional management health / social care services. Experience working therapeutically with people with significant physical, behavioural, emotional or mental health difficulties, and their families/carers. Experience of working in the NHS Experience of working with third sector providers Experience of leading and contributing to the development of services. Experience of working within a multicultural framework. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES Essential
Up to date knowledge of: the psychological needs of people with physical health difficulties and the usual range of co-presenting difficulties o- current best practice when working with people with physical health problems, and - wider clinical issues as evidenced by CPD log as recommended by the BPS. Knowledge and skills in the assessment and treatment of people in physical health settings and the usual range of co-presenting problems. Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management Highly developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS. Demonstrated skills in providing consultation & training to other professional and non-professional groups. Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology. Knowledge of relevant health and social care legislation. Ability and knowledge relating to self-harm and safeguarding related risk assessment and care-planning Ability to meet the travelling requirements of the post Skills in the management of verbal abuse and physical aggression Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.
