About this role

The Middle School Art Teacher fosters creativity, artistic expression, and appreciation for the visual arts among students in grades 6–8. This role involves designing engaging, standards-aligned lessons that develop students’ technical skills, critical thinking, and cultural awareness in art. As part of a charter school environment, the teacher supports the school’s mission, often integrating arts across the curriculum and contributing to a collaborative, innovative culture.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

• Plan and deliver engaging art lessons aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Visual Arts

• Teach a variety of media and techniques (drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art, etc.)

• Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs and learning styles

• Integrate art history, cultural context, and cross-curricular connections

Classroom Environment

• Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive art classroom

• Establish clear expectations for behavior, materials use, and cleanup

• Promote creativity, respect, and constructive critique among students

Assessment & Student Growth

• Assess student work using rubrics and performance-based evaluations

• Provide timely, constructive feedback to support artistic development

• Track student progress and maintain accurate records

Collaboration & School Community

• Collaborate with teachers to integrate arts into other subject areas

• Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school events

• Organize student art displays, exhibitions, or showcases

Charter School Contribution

• Support the mission and goals of the charter school

• Contribute to school initiatives, clubs, or extracurricular activities (e.g., art club)

• Engage with families through conferences, communication, and events

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or related field

• Eligibility for or possession of a North Carolina teaching license (or willingness to obtain)

• Experience working with middle school-aged students

Preferred

• Valid NC Educator License in Art (K–12)

• Experience in a charter or innovative school setting

• Familiarity with project-based learning or arts integration

• Strong classroom management skills
