Department: Department of Ocean Science Job Posting Details The Department of Ocean Science is recruiting a high caliber candidate to fill a Technical Officer position. The appointee will be responsible for providing technical and administrative and support to the daily operation and maintenance of the equipment and facilities in the Department’s research and teaching labs. His/her responsibilities include:
• Manage the IT network infrastructure, virtual servers, and multiple-CPU or GPU parallel computing systems (in Unix/Linux environments) in the department. • Assist in installing, configuring, diagnosing and troubleshooting, upgrading and inventory control of software and hardware of computers, network and research computing systems (including bioinformatics servers and computing clusters) in the department. • Liaise with the university’s IT Office to ensure network security and infrastructure upgrades to uphold cybersecurity standards of the department. • Prepare laboratories for academic courses and research projects, maintain the upkeep of communal equipment and experimental material supplies. • Provide training in the use of experimental equipment and facilities to users and ensure smooth instrumental operations. • Assist in monitoring laboratory safety and access control in compliance with the University's safety regulations and conduct safety training to research staff of the laboratories. • Provide technical support in building and maintaining research computing systems, including bioinformatics servers and pipelines, for research groups within the department. • Perform any other duties assigned by senior management.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in science disciplines, or a relevant higher diploma/higher certificate with at least 2 years of post-qualification working experience in biology or chemistry laboratories. Experience in laboratory management and administration, and providing IT support to a Department, is strongly preferred, particularly hands-on experience in building and maintaining research computing systems (e.g. bioinformatics servers, parallel computing clusters) rather than end-user use only. The ideal candidate should have a strong sense of responsibility, be self-initiative and able to multi-task and work independently as well as in a team. As a liaison person for the team, he/she should have good communication skills on inter-departmental tasks and be an intra-departmental communication bridge among different user groups of the laboratory. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
