About this role
Seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to manage our Equine Import Quarantine Facility. This critical role is responsible for the smooth and compliant operation of our quarantine process, ensuring the health and well-being of imported horses while adhering to all regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience handling horses, a strong understanding of equine health, and exceptional organizational skills.
Responsibilities:
• Serve as the primary point of contact for equine import companies, import owners, the clinic's veterinary team, referral labs, barn staff, and state veterinarians.
• Understand and strictly adhere to CEM (Contagious Equine Metritis) testing protocol guidelines for mares and stallions, including quarantine processes, and maintain the CEM Quarantine Facility within established guidelines.
• Schedule and coordinate state veterinarian visits to observe testing protocols.
• Accurately complete lab requisition forms, label, and prepare lab samples for timely submission.
• Handle mares and stallions with confidence and expertise.
• Assist with handling mares and stallions during live cover test breeding.
• Manage the CEM test mare herd, including administering injections and procuring additional mares as needed.
• Apply for quarantines, manage all associated paperwork, and submit documentation to state veterinarians for release at the end of the quarantine period.
• Perform daily barn chores, including cleaning stalls, feeding and watering, applying blankets/fans as needed, and grooming.
• Direct a small team to assist with daily chores.
• Thoroughly strip and disinfect stalls, buckets, and grooming supplies between horses to maintain biosecurity.
• Monitor the daily health of horses within the facility and promptly alert the veterinary team of any observed abnormalities.
• Schedule and coordinate with horse haulers for drop-off and pick-up of horses - some evenings, weekends or holidays may be required.
Qualifications:
• Extensive experience handling horses, preferably including experience with stallions and breeding procedures.
• Strong understanding of equine health and disease management.
• Knowledge of CEM testing protocols and quarantine procedures is highly desirable but not required.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent communication skills to communicate with owners, DVM's and state officials.
• Ability to manage a small team effectively.
• Physical ability to perform the required duties, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
