Job SummaryThis position is a Billing Technician located at the Division of Administrative Services, Business Office, Blackfeet Service Unit, Indian Health Service, Browning, MT. This position reports to the Business Office Manager or designee. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).
QualificationsTo qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. GS-5: 4 years above high school OR your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: searching and retrieving individual patient record(s) to gather and compile information for billing for outpatient services and inpatient hospitalization; maintaining files on pending and completed claims; performing daily interviews to obtain specific demographic and insurance information; preparing authorization for release of medical information, assignment of benefits, and other authorization for obtaining prior approval and pre-certification; responding to inquiries and requests for information. GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: billing the applicable agency for services provided to a patient; responding to third party requirements on post-payment reviews, exclusions, denials, and appeals; provides orientation and training to appropriate personnel; verifying that medical records contain proper documentation in accordance with regulations; monitoring inpatient daily census on a concurrent basis. GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: submitting claims to third party payers and/or responsible parties, rebill or correct billing of accounts previously submitted; verify information, review reports to identify claims and use the various types of computer systems; performs audits and ensures accuracy of all codes prior to processing. Specialized Experience (All positions except Reporting Stenographer, Shorthand Reporter, and Closed Microphone Reporter)--Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities(KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Major DutiesPerform accurate and timely preparation and submission of claims to third party payers, intermediaries and responsible parties according to established procedures. Maintenance and control of unbilled claims, including assigned section of patient receivables. Correct errors for all rejected/suspended claims. Submit daily billing productivity report. Background Investigation Requirement: This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment. A background investigation is a standard process used by the Federal Government to verify an individual's identity, employment history, education, and other relevant information to determine suitability for Federal service. Upon receipt of instructions, applicants must complete all required background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Timely completion is critical to avoid delays in processing or a determination of unsuitability.
