We are a community school with 880 students aged 11-16 years on roll. Situated in the historic town of Dalton in Furness, we enjoy being on the fringe of the Lake District National Park. As an Ofsted rated ‘good’ school, we believe in high expectations, excellent teaching and ambition for every young person.
The Maths Department
We follow an ambitious, newly developed scheme of work that challenges all students.
Our ethos as a department is that all students can achieve in Mathematics and should be provided with adaptive teaching that enables this success.
Following the philosophy of the school in Key Stage 3 we have a high ability teaching group in each band with the rest being mixed ability.
In Key Stage 4 we have a high ability class and do start to stream the mixed ability grouping but do not decide on tier of entry for the exams until year 11. At GCSE the exam board we follow is AQA.
Extra curricular activities are a strength at Dowdales, and the Maths department contributes to this through educational visits, team and individual challenges and clubs.
