This post is for a consultant in Intensive Care (single specialty/dual trained with Anaesthesia or Emergency Medicine/ or completing CESR application). This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated clinician to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in George Eliot Hospital Nuneaton Applicants are required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register, due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview or has CESR application underway.

Main duties of the job

The appointee is expected to be involved in the department's undergraduate, postgraduate and other appropriate educational activities. The appointee will have a responsibility for the running of their clinical service, integrating this with the department as a whole and ensuring appropriate communication with anaesthetists, other specialities, managers, and hospital committees. The appointee will be responsible for contributing to the achievement of relevant aspects of the Trust's contractual obligations and business plans.

Job description Job responsibilities

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic consultant with an interest in Intensive care. This post provides an opportunity for the appointee to introduce new ideas and contribute to the progress of the Intensive care department. The post holder is expected to participate in weekday Intensive care cover with some weekend activity. The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of critical care medicine to the Trust. Responsibilities:

Provide safe, evidence-based critical care medicine.Maintain and improve standards and quality of critical care services.Supervise and train junior staff in both critical cares as required. Maintain skills and update knowledge base meeting the Continuing Education and Professional Development requirements of the relevant professional body e.g. Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, Royal College of Physicians, Royal College of Anaesthetists. Participate in the audit programme of the Department. Attend departmental and governance meeting This post will attract a job plan of 10 PAs of which 8.5 PAs will be for direct patient care. Further clinical sessions may be undertaken by mutual consent and with suitable recompense. Noting that 1PA - 4hrs, a draft proposed job plan comprising 10 PA's is as follows: Each day consist of a shift from 8 am 6 pm with handover incorporated into this period.Monday - AM:ICU (DCC), PM: ICU (DCC) - PA: 2.5

Tuesday -AM: ICU (DCC), PM: ICU (DCC) - PA: 2.5

Wednesday - AM: Non-NHS, PM: Non-NHS - PA: 0

Thursday -AM: SPA, PM: SPA - PA: 1.5

Friday - AM: ICU (DCC), PM: ICU (DCC) - PA: 2.5

Weekend Cover - PA: 1.0

Notes:

This is a Specimen Job Plan and the final job plan will be negotiated on appointment. The weekdays highlighted are merely used for demonstration purposes and will not necessarily be the days agreed after successful appointment. SPA = Supporting Professional Activity 1.5 PA will be allocated to the successful applicant on appointment for the first year of appointment. The successful candidate will not be expected to cover the ICU outside the advertised 8 am-6 pm rota. These shifts will be provided by our anaesthetic/ICM colleagues. Weekend work will be twice a month and will consist of either Saturday or Sunday[not both] and will be a shift from 8 am and 6 pm. There will be adequate anaesthetic coverage of the nearby obstetric and emergency theatres to provide support if needed. The appointee will be expected to take an active part in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching and training and in this respect, as long as you remain a Consultant within the Trust, you will have an opportunity to become an Honorary clinical lecturer at University of Warwick.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Has FICM approved training in Critical Care Medicine to Consultant level or equivalent training recognised by FICM OR has a CESR application underway. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Desirable

Has attended a Critical Care Ultrasound Course or has a Critical Care ultrasound qualification Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates

Qualifications Essential

Full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise

Desirable

Entry on Specialist Register in ICM (or CCT/CESR expected within 6 months of interview date) Has FFICM or DCIM or EDIC ALS / APLS/ ATLS provider status

Skills Essential

Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of a busy Intensive care unit Ability to manage and lead a multi-disciplinary team Understands the principles of audit and clinical governance Has a good understanding of evidence based Medicine Ability to teach skills to Medical, Nursing and other staffing groups Has experience of teaching foundation doctors and speciality trainees to the standards required by the royal college

Has participated in at least one audit/ quality improvement project Has knowledge and skills in human factors Has undertaken "Good clinical practice training" or equivalent research training Has participated in a research project Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years Has delivered oral/poster presentation(s) at regional meetings Has delivered oral/poster presentation(s) at national or international meeting(s) Has experience of using a wide range of IT Regularly participates in a teaching programme
