Job summary

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic doctor to join our friendly and dynamic dermatology team based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). The post is suitable for a doctor who has completed IMT Stage 1 (year 2) and wishes to gain further experience in dermatology to support an application for a dermatology training number. The post would commence on 5th August 2026 on a fixed term basis until 3rd August 2027.

Our dermatology service is one of the largest in the West Midlands, delivering dermatology care to over 90,000 patients a year. We offer a range of subspecialty services including medical dermatology and biologics, complex skin surgery (including Mohs micrographic surgery), a regional skin lymphoma service, the regional specialist skin cancer multidisciplinary team (SSMDT) and a tertiary vulval service.

The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate and work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team. A strong commitment to the activity of the department and involvement with clinical governance and audit is expected.

Consultant Dermatologists and Training Leads for Dermatology at QEHB

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the care of patients with dermatological problems in both outpatient and inpatient settings. They will work with other residents and nursing colleagues, under consultant supervision. The post holder will undertake a mixture of medical dermatology and skin cancer clinics. They may also have a skin biopsy list depending on service requirements and their expertise, with supervision as appropriate.

The post holder will participate in an on-call dermatology rota providing middle grade cover for the acute dermatology service. The post holder will usually do weekday on-call work on Thursdays (when registrars on the dermatology training programme have protected teaching). They will also contribute to the weekend on-call rota on a 1:6 to 1:7 rota. Please note, the weekday and weekend out-of-hours service currently runs until 7pm but it is under review and may be reduced or cease.

The post holder will join the weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings at 8am on Mondays, alternating between medical dermatology and dermatopathology meetings. The post holder will participate and present at monthly departmental operational and governance meetings. They may also have opportunities to attend other MDTs such as the dermatology-rheumatology MDT. The post holder will be encouraged to present at regional dermatology meetings.

Audit and Quality Improvement (QIP)

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the departmental audit programme. There are ongoing audits and QIPs within and these can be presented at our monthly Team meetings.

Clinical Governance

The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain, and develop the quality and effectiveness of care. The Trust is committed to the development and maintenance of the highest clinical standards through individual appraisal.

Qualifications Essential

*Medical degree (MBBS/ MBChb or equivalent) *Full GMC registration with a licence to practise *Eligibility to live and work in the UK

*Completion of Internal Medicine Training year 2 (or equivalent) *Four years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a less than full-time basis) *Minimum of six months of experience working within the NHS *Evidence of participation in continuing professional development (CPD) *Quality improvement/ audit project experience
