Applicants are invited to apply for the above post in the Cardiology Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC) on a part-time basis, (5 PAs). The individual should have expertise in inherited cardiac conditions with relevant specialist higher training.

The applicant should be both enthusiastic and flexible to meet the many needs of the department. Good organisational skills are important, as is the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams whilst upholding the Trust's values.

Experience and interest in cardiac genetics, cardiomyopathy/heart failure, and channelopathy are actively welcomed and encouraged. The appointee will run outpatient clinics, review inpatients, contribute to multi-disciplinary team working and participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings. The appointee will provide innovation and leadership in the further development of the inherited cardiac conditions service.

Main duties of the job

The postholder's duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations and at regional centres. As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.

This post is part of the ICC service at Oxford University Hospitals and will working alongside other consultants and members of the multidisciplinary team. The key aim is for the candidate to participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care. They will be required to contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development. The post holder with support the clinical geneticists and advanced nurse specialists perform their clinical duties. The post holder will have access to an administrator that is shared with other members of the team and will be provided with the appropriate IT equipment and support to undertake their clinical duties.

About us

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides integrated cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services for health authorities in the Oxford region and for a number of health authorities in neighbouring regions. The population served is approximately 2.5 million.

The successful applicant will join existing consultant cardiology colleagues who provide comprehensive secondary and tertiary care services. The NHS Department works closely with the University Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, with academic medical staff and NHS consultants working across both Departments. Academic interests cover myocardial hypertrophy, vascular biology, and cardiac CT and MRI.

The Cardiology Department provides a local service to Oxfordshire and surrounding counties as the local district general hospital, as well as offering a tertiary service for interventional cardiology. Good relations with colleagues in neighbouring district general hospitals ensures a flow of both elective and emergent referrals.

Clinical

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the postholder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The postholders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. Clinical Governance

The postholder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The postholder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Management

The postholder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his /her patients and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair. The post holder will have access to mentoring by other consultant colleagues when appointed.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training Essential

Medical degree and eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practice. MRCP On GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining CCT. NB. Non-UK trained doctors must be on the GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology by date of interview. Fully trained in inherited cardiac conditions, including experience in a tertiary centre ICC service (cardiomyopathy and channelopathy) Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in ICC

Desirable

Higher medical degree relevant to ICC (MD/PhD). Sub-speciality interest inadditional clinical field relevant to ICC

Experience Essential

Comprehensive clinical experience in General Cardiology and ICC. Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.

Desirable

Further expertise in imaging (echo, CT, CMR), devices or specific areas relevant to ICC.

Skills and Knowledge Essential

Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills. Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management. Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork and ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team. Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication & interpersonal skills. Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training. Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities. Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research.

Desirable

Evidence of leadership in the development of clinical services. Management qualification. Education/teaching qualification. Management training or qualification. Peer reviewed publications in field of ICC Higher degree (PhD or MD) relevant to ICC

Driving licence required.
