About this role

Job summary

We are seeking a skilled & enthusiastic Band 7 Physiotherapist with experience of working in neurology and with a complex multi-pathology caseload. You will be committed to deliver high quality, patient centred therapy, demonstrating the value of physiotherapy interventions and striving for the best outcomes.

You will have advanced clinical assessment skills in neuro-physiotherapy designing treatment plans to promote functional improvement. You will work closely with the Highly Specialised OT and as part of a Neuro AHP MDT.

You will support patient flow with timely assessment of complex patients making recommendations for discharge including home based support, inpatient or specialised inpatient rehabilitation and support other staff with decision making..

An integral part of your role will be training and developing staff to gain skills in neuro-physiotherapy assessment and treatment to enable ward level management of patients and to be an expert resource for staff.

Our teams of OT's and PT's work in integrated clinical specialities and are well supported by Clinical Leads.

Main duties of the job

To take a lead role in the Physiotherapy management of patient's presenting to the service with neurological conditions and impairments for example, traumatic and acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury and progressive neurological conditions. The post holder will also be required to in-reach into the Intensive Care Unit to provide Physiotherapy advice/intervention for patients where a prolonged ITU stay may put them at risk of a significant deterioration in function.

To be an autonomous practitioner providing evidence-based Physiotherapy assessment and treatment within the specialty for patients with acute and complex presentations. To be competent to manage this caseload of patients, demonstrating high-level problem-solving ability, clinical reasoning skills and own independent judgement.

To work closely and in collaboration with the equivalent Highly Specialised Occupational Therapist (OT) post in the team to manage therapy needs for the neurology/complex multi-pathology caseload.

To ensure that both profession specific treatments and interventions and those where a joint working focus are required are delivered in a timely, effective and consistent manner.

To work in collaboration with the Highly Specialised OT to agree patient centred goals for the allocated caseload and the appropriate use of outcome measures to demonstrate efficacy of intervention.

Education and Qualifications Essential

Hold a recognised degree or diploma in Physiotherapy Current HCPC registration Evidence of relevant post graduate courses or training to post-graduate degree/diploma level IELTS Level 7 - Essential for overseas applicants Evidence of CPD completion in line with HCPC registration requirements

Desirable

Member of relevant clinical special interest groups/sections. Introductory Leadership/Management Course

Experience Essential

Evidence of work experience acquired at a minimum of band 6 level, working as a Physiotherapist assessing and treating clients with neurological conditions and complex needs in acute or rehabilitation settings. Relevant post graduate clinical experience, working in within Neurosciences, Neuro trauma and acquired Neurological conditions in the NHS Relevant post graduate clinical experience, working in within Neurosciences, Neuro trauma and acquired Neurological conditions. Experience of undertaking comprehensive neurological assessment and treatments with clients presenting with a range of physical impairments. Experience of using a range of assessments and treatment approaches for clients with a multi-pathology presentation. Experience of managing a clinically complex caseload as an autonomous practitioner Experience of successful partnership working with statutory and third sector providers and agencies. Experience of appropriately advocating for patients with the MDT and wider system partners Experience of delivering formal and informal teaching Experience of supervising and appraising staff and students.

Desirable

Experience of neurological upper and lower limb management including management of spasticity Experience of rehabilitating patients in an ITU setting Experience of promoting the Physiotherapy role within an MDT setting

Knowledge Essential

Highly specialist knowledge of Physiotherapy in the management of patients with neurological conditions Knowledge of the range of standardised and non- standardised assessments and treatment approaches for use with client with neurological presentations. An understanding of relevant clinical guidelines and the current best evidence in relation to therapy for clients with neurological conditions and impairments. Knowledge of the role of statutory and non-statutory services in supporting people with neurological impairment or those requiring complex disability management Understanding of quality improvement process and audit and their practical application Knowledge of equipment pertaining to mobility, seating, positioning, splinting and pressure care for patients who require complex disability management.

Knowledge of risk assessment and risk management in relation to clinical work area/practices Knowledge of HR processes relating to managing staff performance, absence,

Skills & Abilities Essential

The ability to analyse clinical and non-clinical complex facts and situations which, require the interpretation and comparison of a range of options. Excellent organisational skills, and the ability to competently prioritise a caseload for self and others. Evidence of ability to consistently and effectively supervise and delegate and monitor work given to team members and students Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate complex information in a clear way. Able to deliver training to other staff including those from other disciplines. Intermediate computer and IT skills

Evidence of involvement in quality improvement work, and the ability to implement changes as a result.

Other Qualities Essential

Worked in the NHS or equivalent UK setting Physical ability to carry out the role, which involves manual handling of patients and frequent moderate effort and concentration for periods of time.
