Brachytherapy at Guy's Cancer Centre is entering one of the most exciting periods in its history, and we're looking for someone who wants to help lead the journey.
As Deputy Head of Brachytherapy Physics, you'll play a key role in shaping how our service grows and develops over the coming years. You'll lead a supportive and motivated team, helping people build confidence and develop their skills, while making sure we continue to give patients safe, high-quality care.
Our service covers a wide range of treatments, including prostate and gynaecological cancers as well as more specialist work. With a major upgrade of our equipment on the horizon, this is a rare opportunity to influence how brachytherapy is delivered in the future.
This role is perfect for someone who enjoys leading people, improving services, and turning ideas into practical changes that benefit patients and staff alike.
Main duties of the job
In this role, you'll balance leadership, clinical work and service development. Day to day, you will:
Support and lead a team of physicists, helping them grow and succeed in their roles Take responsibility for the safe and effective delivery of brachytherapy treatments Work closely with clinicians, radiographers and other colleagues to plan and review patient treatments Oversee and check complex treatment plans, stepping in to solve problems when needed Help maintain and improve the quality and safety of our equipment and processes Play a key role in upcoming equipment replacement and service development projects Contribute to teaching, training and mentoring of staff and trainees Support research, innovation and new ways of working Alongside this, you'll step in for the Head of Brachytherapy Physics when needed and help ensure the service runs smoothly.

This is a senior role where youll combine handson clinical work with leadership and service development.
Leadership and management
Support the Head of Brachytherapy Physics and act as their deputy when required Manage and prioritise work across the team to keep the service running smoothly Supervise and support colleagues, including performance, wellbeing and professional development Help recruit, train and mentor staff at different stages of their careers
Clinical and technical work
Lead on complex treatment planning and checking, making sure treatments are accurate and safe Provide expert advice to clinical teams on treatment approaches and options Support delivery of brachytherapy procedures, including being present during treatments when needed Investigate and resolve problems quickly and effectively, especially in timecritical situations Help ensure all equipment is working correctly and safely, including testing and quality checks
Service development and innovation
Play a key role in upgrading brachytherapy equipment and shaping future services Help design and improve processes, making them safer and more efficient Work with clinical and academic partners to explore new techniques and expand what we offer Support the safe introduction of new technologies and ways of working
Teaching, training and research
Train and support physicists, radiographers and other staff Contribute to teaching programmes and professional development activities Take part in research, audits and service improvement projects Share knowledge through presentations, teaching or publications
Quality and safety
Make sure all work meets professional standards, regulations and local policies Support a culture of safety, openness and continuous improvement Take part in audits and quality assurance activities
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Good (1st or 2nd class) honours degree in a relevant subject Relevant MSc or higher degree Qualified to act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) under IRMER in the field of radiotherapy
Professional Registration Essential
State registration as a Clinical Scientist
Desirable
Full Member of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (or equivalent)
Experience Essential
Highly developed specialist knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices in radiotherapy physics, building on theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Specialist training on and practical experience with a wide range of radiotherapy equipment and clinical applications Advanced knowledge in a major area of radiotherapy physics such as external beam treatment planning, radiotherapy equipment, imaging, dosimetry or brachytherapy. Advanced responsible experience post registration working in radiotherapy physics Specialist training and practical experience on linear accelerators, treatment planning, imaging, dosimetry and brachytherapy systems.
Desirable
Experience of involvement in original peer-reviewed radiotherapy research Supervision of small project teams
