Job summary

An exciting vacancy has arisen at The Beeches Medical Practice Shrewsbury for a trained Phlebotomist to join our friendly team working at least 3 mornings per week, with felxibility on days times and additional hours if required.

Main duties of the job

Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice Treatment Room Team, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the Phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis.

About us

The Beeches Medical Practice is a friendly 4 Partner Practice. We are situated on the south side of Shrewsbury providing medical care for approximately 7,100 people. The practice covers a wide area from Bayston Hill to Leebotwood in the north - south direction and Acton Burnell to Pulverbatch in the east - west direction.

We have two surgeries, Bayston Hill and Dorrington. Dorrington being our dispensing surgery.

We are an efficient and friendly team of 4 GP partners, 1 ANP, 2 Practice Nurses, a HCA/Phlebotomist, a Practice Manager, Operations Manager, Dispensary Manager, Care Coordinator, and a team of 11 Medical administrators, Dispensers and Receptionists.

We are a training practice, and clinicians and staff are very involved in ensuring the trainees gain full experience of all aspects of life in general practice. We look after Medical Students from Keele University and GP Registrars for various timescales.

We use EMIS Web clinical system along with Anima and Teamnet

Job description Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample

b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

c. Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system

d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples

e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff

h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to:

a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

c. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice

Experience Essential

Experience of working with the general public Experience of working in a healthcare setting Ability to record accurate clinical notes Excellent communication skills (written and oral) Clear, polite telephone manner Effective time management (planning and organising) Ability to work as a team member and autonomously Good interpersonal skills Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure Polite and confident Flexible and cooperative Motivated High levels of integrity and loyalty Sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations Ability to work under pressure/in stressful situations Effectively able to communicate and understand the needs of the patient Effectively utilise resources Punctual and committed to supporting the team effort Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check Occupational Health clearance

Qualifications Essential

Relevant qualification in venepuncture Good standard of general education

Experience of working in a primary care environment
