Consultant in Neurology and Stroke Physician

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Stroke and Neurology services at The Royal London Hospital as a Consultant Neurologist & Stroke Physician. This substantive consultant post offers the opportunity to work within one of the UK's leading Hyper Acute Stroke Units and a well-established Neurology department, delivering high quality care across a diverse and complex patient population.

The successful candidate will provide consultant led hyper acute and acute stroke care, participate in the Trust's thrombolysis and thrombectomy on-call rota, and contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive neurology service. The role includes inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, multidisciplinary team working, service development, teaching, audit and quality improvement activities.

The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Director, Clinical Lead, Senior Nurse, General Manager, Service Manager and wider multidisciplinary team to support the continued development of stroke and neurology services across Barts Health. We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated clinician with expertise in stroke medicine and neurology who is committed to delivering outstanding patient care, supporting innovation and contributing to the future direction of the service.

Main duties of the job

To support the Stroke Clinical Lead and Clinical Director in advancing service developments and improvements.

To aid and facilitate the rapid transfer of stroke patients from Barts Health to other Acute Stroke Units along the relevant pathway.

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient acute and general neurology service.

To maintain and promote team and multi-disciplinary work with the specialities working closely and regularly with neurology

Job description Job responsibilities

To share responsibility for providing evidence-based standards of care for all inpatients and outpatients.

To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the Patients Charter and the local purchasers contracts.

To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services and all healthcare agencies.

To encourage and foster the governance process at clinical, managerial and medical levels and to take part in regional audit in support of evidence-based medicine.

To participate fully in the management of the Department and to liaise closely with the General Managers, Clinical Leads and Clinical Directors.

To take part in continuing medical education activities; there will also be a commitment to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching in the departments, including development and delivery of a teaching programme.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

Leadership and proper functioning of the services in his/her charge in line with agreed policies at the Trust.

Development of his/her own specialty interests, including active participation in research programmes.

Corporate and singular responsibility for the management of the junior medical staff including the approval and monitoring of junior staff rotas and locum appointments.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

MBBS or equivalent MRCP (UK) or equivalent Fully registered with the GMC with a full licence to practice On the specialist register or within 6 months, in one of the Stroke Medicine parent specialities (i.e. Geriatrics, Neurology, Cardiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Rehabilitation Medicine)

Desirable

Higher Degree (MSc, Md or PhD) CCT in Stroke Medicine

Experience Essential

Stroke Medicine experience (at equivalent level to Stroke CCT). Ability to practice independently as a Consultant in Hyper Acute Stroke and Stroke Rehabilitation. Teaching undergraduates and postgraduates Audit experience Thrombolysis & Thrombectomy experience

Experience of multidisciplinary Stroke services Research experience GCP Certificate Clinical Management

Knowledge Essential

Up to date with recent advances in Stroke Care across the entire pathway Change management Quality improvement
