Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Assistant to join Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust at Oak Tree Ward, Woodland Centre in Uxbridge.

Oak Tree Ward is a 17 bedded Older Adult Mental Health Inpatient unit. We are a service for those mainly over the age of 70 (Although we are an ageless service), those living with cognitive impairment, or those with a high frailty score over 6.We are an assessment ward- accepting people for admission from Home, Care homes, Acute hospitals.

We support service users with; Anxiety, Bi-polar, Depression, Dementia, Parkinsons, Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia.

Working as part of a friendly team, you will be responsible for assisting multi-disciplinary health professionals in the provision of a high quality service.

We have a varied Multi-disciplinary team; Consultant psychiatrist, Junior Drs, Ward Manager, Mental Health nurses, Dual trained nurses, Nurse Associates, Healthcare Support workers, Occupational therapists and physiotherapist.

Main duties of the job

This job role involves working under the supervision or registered nurses to support our clients to achieve their day-to-day needs, such as;

Washing and dressing- ensure all patients are offered support with a shower, changing their clothes, maintaining oral hygiene and supporting as needed.

Ensuring all patients are supported with their toileting needs throughout the day, to prevent incontinence and skin breakdown .

Monitoring patient finger and toe nails and offering nail care when needed.

Maintaining adequate dietary intake, by monitoring all patients having meals, documentation and reporting any concerns around refusal, supporting patients to eat their meal when required.

Undertaking patient vital signs, being aware of NEWS2 and the correct ranges and how to escalate concerns to nursing and medical teams.

Observing patients on different levels of observations, including constant supervision.

Maintaining documentation such as observations, fluid chart, NEWS2 scores, stool chart, sleep chart.

There will be opportunities to develop your skills through mandatory trainings, ECG training, Venepuncture training.

Band 3 Health Care Support Worker work closely with people who use our Services, their families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. Band 3 Health Care Support Workers are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

Patient Experience is extremely important to us and working as a Band 3 Health Care Support Worker you will contribute to the patients using our services by making them feel respected and empowered to make decisions about their health and wellbeing by: Working in partnership with patients and their families and carers Gaining consent and, as far as possible, involving people in all decision making Signposting patients and carers to supportive services e.g. the courses provided by the Recovery and Wellbeing College or services provided by the local authority or the voluntary sector Reassuring people by being professional, responsive, knowledgeable and confident Escalating complaints or concerns effectively and quickly in line with the Trust policy

Supporting yourself and others, engaged staff are more productive and Band 3 Health Care Assistants can ensure they are engaged in the Trust and the work we all do by: Participating in supervision and annual appraisals which will help you to reflect on your work, understand your objectives and monitor your progress towards achieving them Using continuing professional development funds to consolidate, update or improve clinical skills

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Previous experience of working with a multidisciplinary team Experience of working with the general public communicating with a range of different people Previous experience of working in a fast-paced environment Previous experience of working within a customer focused environment

Desirable

Healthcare/NHS or similar experience in community or hospital settings Volunteer sector Experience in a caring role Previous experience in mental health setting or working with adults suffering from mental health problems

Education & Qualifications Essential

Numeracy and Literacy skills required to keep accurate records and administer medicines Spoken and written English, to an appropriate standard to fulfil the job requirement

Desirable

NVQ L3 or equivalent

Skills and knowledge Essential

Microsoft Office/Email/IT Skills Able to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, update others in the team and use handover effectively. Speaking face to face but also by telephone. Maintaining accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records both electronic and handwritten which adhere to the CNWL policies Contribute to the implementation of care plans by helping to assess patients, develop, implement and evaluate a care plan Able to work under your own initiative but follow the directions of care plans and Band 4 staff or registered Nurses Obtain consent and understand how the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards impacts on your work and the people you are working with Work well with other members of the team including communicating effectively, being kind and considerate, reliable and enthusiastic. Contribute to the culture of the team and play a role in making it inclusive, kind and hard working. Help others in the team achieve their objectives and deliver safe, effective care. ble to talk to people about sensitive issues in a supportive manner but also challenge others assertively where necessary
