About this role

Job summary

The ideal candidate will have previously completed the Specialist Diploma in Haematology and Blood Transfusion and/or an IBMS accredited master's degree or be able to demonstrate equivalence in a relevant subject and have current HCPC registration.

All duties are performed in line with documented laboratory processes to ensure high quality, reproducible patient results. Techniques include manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory methods including microscopy. Excellent attention to detail is required to ensure integrity of patient and laboratory records is maintained in line with ISO15189 requirements. The post holder will work and communicate with a range of staff and service users.

The successful candidate will be required to fully participate in the shift pattern which covers 24 hours per day, 7 day per week working, including lone and night working.

Main duties of the job

o Processes specialist investigations in department.

o Provides specialist advice to clinicians as to appropriateness of tests and timescales.

o Provides specialist service e.g. training, problem solving for specialist requirement.

o Work independently and lead on specialist area as directed by Senior Biomedical Scientists (BMS).

o Acts as mentor for more junior scientific and support staff.

o To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service.

o Supervises and/or trains less experienced staff in own area of work.

o The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.

o Maintain and promote professional image of the pathology department.

o Where required, to lead and supervise a section of the laboratory.

Person Specification

Education & Qualification Essential

HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist. Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent. Hold or working towards an appropriate post registration IBMS Specialist Diploma or demonstrable equivalence to the learning outcomes of the Specialist Diploma. Evidence of CPD.

Experience & Knowledge Essential

Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of specialist biomedical procedures relevant to post. Extensive practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory. Experience of Pathology IT systems. Experience of Quality Management Systems. Experience of performing Risk Assessments.

Desirable

Relevant experience of working in the NHS. Experience of line managing staff.

Skills & Abilities Essential

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Interpretation and analytical skills. Demonstrable interpersonal skills - can work as part of a team or independently. Able to prioritise own workload and that of others to meet needs of the service. Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time. High degree of manual dexterity to perform complex laboratory techniques.

Desirable

Demonstrable mentoring skills.
