Our healthcare assistants play a vital role in the practice by supporting patients with long term health conditions. They work alongside the practice nurse team to carry out annual checks and help people understand more about their conditions. They also provide support to some of the most vulnerable patient groups including the housebound elderly and those with learning disabilities.
Our healthcare assistants build long term relationships with our patients, taking an active interest in their care. They offer support when patients may be worried or anxious and always try their hardest to find the best option available.
Main duties of the job
The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant:
Undertake new patient health checks
Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
Facilitate routine BP monitoring.
Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
Support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
Undertake home visits to carry out venepuncture and /or chronic disease data gathering.
Act as a chaperone as required
Undertake venepuncture
When trained, administer some vaccinations and injections.
Carry out ECGs as needed.
Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
Provide support during minor operations or contraceptive clinics as required
Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy
Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

Our Nurse and Healthcare team has a strong team identity and really support each other through out the working week. They are led by an experienced Practice Nurse who takes great pride in supporting and developing the team. We ensure that the team gets time together daily to catch up and take breaks together.
We are a thriving practice with 14,000+ patients. You will be supported by a fantastic team including an experienced practice business manager, operations manager, 5 partners, 5 salaried and 1 retainer GPs, a strong and skilled nursing team, pharmacy team and mental health team and experienced frontline staff.

Successful candidates will be empathetic and able to make connections with patients from many different backgrounds. We are looking for people who make the most of every contact with patients and who take the time to solve problems if they arise.
Experience of working with patients and with SystmOne (clinical system) would be an advantage but is not essential.
We are fairly flexible with regards to hours and welcome applications from those looking for between 30 to 37.5 hours per week. We will work with the best candidate(s) to agree the right working patterns but we would prefer Friday to form part of the working week. You must be able to drive in order to carry out home visits.

Key skills needed for this role: Experience working with the general public. Desirable
Experience of working in primary care or a GP practice would be beneficial but we focus on recruitment for patient skills rather than sector experience. Experience of using S1.
Qualifications Essential
Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level Previous completion of the HCA Care Certificate Phlebotomy certification
