We are looking for a quantitative health researcher to join Born in Bradford and be part of the NIHR Research Support Service's Specialist Centre for Public Health.
You will meet with clients of the NIHR Research Support Service, particularly to strengthen funding applications. There is training and support and it is an excellent way to build your research skills, network, awareness of research funding, and to be embedded in Born in Bradford. An interest in quantitative research methods is essential. You will be part of a group of quantitative public health researchers. We focus on career progression and will facilitate contribution to existing research projects and/or development of your own agenda.
Main duties of the job
Support the work of the NIHR Research Support Service Specialist Centre for Public Health. Meet with clients of the NIHR Research Support Service Specialist Centre for Public Health. Provide leadership and mentorship to junior members of staff. Write reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals, acting as lead author. Recruit and manage research fellows and support staff when required. Design and facilitate training sessions relating to epidemiology. Develop and register research protocols, using epidemiological study designs. Do literature reviews. Do statistical analyses using techniques such as matching, regression, and standardisation. Use visualisations to describe data. Contribute to research projects led by colleagues. Collaborate with internal and external researchers and partners. Identify sources of funding and write grant applications. Present research at meetings and conferences. Undertaking personal development in keeping with the aspiration to be a senior researcher Contribute to a Born in Bradford collaborative team culture, ensuring success of Born in Bradford. Maintain a working knowledge of current legislation regarding participation in research, including Good Clinical Practice, Research Governance and Data Protection.

Born In Bradford is a unique place to study the determinants of health and effects of policy and healthcare interventions. We study topics including childhood obesity, allergies and infections, mental health, and the urban environment. Our data resources include Born In Bradford (www.borninbradford.nhs.uk), a birth cohort study; Born In Bradford's Better Start, which evaluates early-life interventions; the Age of Wonder, a large study of adolescent health; and Connected Bradford, a whole-population linked database including health, social care, and education records.
Person Specification
Experience Essential
Worked in a multidisciplinary research team in a health-related field Conducted statistical analyses for epidemiological research projects Published research, with a minimum of three publications as first or contributing author in peer reviewed journals
Desirable
Used quasi-experimental methods such as interrupted time-series or difference-in-difference designs Worked with routinely collected data, such as GP or hospital data, and processed this kind of data so it can be used for research Gained approvals from research ethics committees or other relevant research authorities
Skills Essential
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) Managing, processing, and organising complex data, for example longitudinal cohort data or healthcare data collected by GPs Doing statistical analysis such as matching, regression, and standardisation Using statistical software such as STATA or R, including documentation of analysis Working on multiple projects in parallel
Knowledge Essential
Epidemiological methods including cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, quasi-experimental designs, and randomised controlled trials Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
Qualifications Essential
PhD in a relevant area, or a relevant postgraduate qualification and a minimum of three years relevant research work experience
