Job summary To provide effective clinical and holistic individualised patient centred care to the patients and families, ensuring delivery is to the highest standard. Maintaining evidenced based practice is performed at all times, being responsible for updating own knowledge and skills in line with the Trust polices, multidisciplinary team and the NMC Code. Providing good leadership skills and actively participating in service development. Working as part of the team to support both junior staff and students in your charge, creating a positive atmosphere to encourage further development of others.
Main duties of the job The band 6 sister / charge nurse is an experienced nurse who must be able to interact at all levels of the nursing and midwifery profession. The individual is expected to represent the department they work supporting the clinical leadership team as well as the clinical team to support in the delivery of high quality, standardised evidenced based care. The post holder will work with a variety of different clinical specialists including. Key working relationships will include: Associate Director of Nursing Head of Nursing Matrons Department / Ward manager Clinical site management team Ward / department team Wider MDT Specialist discharge team

Job description Job responsibilities
Responsible for leading and co-ordinating the unit
Ensuring the effective running on the department in the absence of the departmental manager
Set standards for the unit and ensures high standards of nursing care are maintained at all times
Ensure that all medical and emergency equipment is in a safe condition and is ready for when required and that faulty equipment is reported and / or replaced as necessary 2
Ensure that all staff have staff have necessary mandatory training in relation to all equipment used
Collects and collates and reports information as required
Ensures evidence based innovative practice in the delivery of nursing care and supports others in the implementation of changes and identified to improve care
Ensures the application of local standards, policies and philosophies which further the philosophy of patient centred, individual and evidence based care for all patients
Actively supports in the management of resources; human, material and financial
To inform / escalate to departmental manager / matron if acceptable levels of care, standards, practice, patient safety is compromised and develop appropriate actions Knowledge, training and experience
Excellent clinical understanding and practice with developed assessment skills
Provide clinical advice as required to all professionals, carers and junior colleagues which promotes clinical practice that reduces risk to patients
Ensure that formal and informal teaching is in place for all staff to ensure evidence-based nursing care is delivered both locally and across the organisation
Communicate national and local policies and initiatives which impact on patient and nursing care, eg, Trust patient safety strategy and nursing, midwifery and AHP strategy
Ensure all staff have access to and act within Trust policies and procedures
To contribute to setting and monitor standards of nursing care within the ward Analysis, planning and organising
Initiate emergency treatment where necessary and co-ordinate other staff in the process
Ensure that all emergency equipment is checked and ready for use, eg cardiac arrest trolley
Ensure that all staff including temporary staff and pre-registration students are aware of emergency procedures to follow
Leads other in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care of patients admitted to the department in accordance to Trust and departmental protocols 3
Support the clinical lead of the department with planning rotas and assisting others to meet the requirements of the clinical area and the needs of the patients, considering skill mix requirements in relation to acuity and dependency
Communicate with clinical site managers in the movement of patients to ensure appropriate allocation and flow within the hospital with due regard to risk management policies and procedures ensures that a safe environment for patients, relatives, carers and staff is maintained
To be clinically competency and confident in the use of specialised equipment in varied clinical settings
