Job summary
This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Medical Physics team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust as an apprentice, combining paid employment with university study towards a BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science (Radiation Engineering).
This apprenticeship offers hands-on experience within a busy NHS department while studying through University of the West of England.

On successful completion, you will achieve a BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science degree with specialist recognition in Radiation Engineering. The programme is endorsed by Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine and accredited by National School of Healthcare Science as part of healthcare science training in England.

Entry requirement: Applicants for the Radiotherapy Engineering pathway must hold an A-level in Physics (or equivalent) at grade C or above, and a minimum of 96 tariff points.

Main duties of the job
To study and gain formal qualification in BSc Healthcare Science Radiation Engineering through the Healthcare Science Apprenticeship Programme.
The post holder will carry out work-based learning in the department under the supervision of a workplace supervisor whilst also attending academic sessions as prescribed by the academic institute.
Clinical Technologist -- Radiotherapy Engineer
The repair and servicing of linear accelerators used at UHB. This work requires specialist knowledge of electronics and mechanical techniques. It involves:
*Fault finding, diagnosing and repairs of complex medical equipment.
*Perform quality control procedures and review and interpret quality control results
*Involvement in scheduled maintenance and calibration
*Ordering of components and spares
* Communicate effectively with stakeholders
* Maintain a professional and courteous attitude
* Maintain good scientific/engineering practice at all times
*Manual handling of heavy equipment is in confined spaces
*Use departmental/Trust computer systems for record keeping and communication
*Light office duties including answering calls, sending parcels, booking in equipment, etc.
The post holder will undertake other duties as may be required to achieve the Trust's objectives, commensurate with the grading of the post.

Qualifications Essential
* Entry to the programme requires the following: * GCSE: Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics or equivalent (we accept Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English). * 96 UCAS Tariff points from any of the following: * 3 x A level subjects grade C or above in physis Or * EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: You'll need a minimum of five units in a relevant STEM Subject. You may be asked to do more based on the size of your units. Please list the units you are studying in your application Or * Access: 15 Level 3 credits at merit or above in the relevant STEM subjects as indicated above. Or * Baccalaureate IB: At least Grade 5 in a higher-level subject in one of the relevant STEM subjects as indicated above. Or * Irish Highers: H2 in one of the relevant STEM subjects as indicated above. Or * T Levels: C or above in Healthcare Science or Science.
Experience Essential
* Be able to manage own workload under supervision and through direction and ensure this meets the required standards
