Job summary North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust (NCM) wishes to appoint a full time Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a special interest in Glaucoma. We are taking applications for a substantive position.
Main duties of the job
The candidate appointed will work on the Warrington site and will be expected to work in other Trust sites if there is further expansion to ophthalmology services. This is a full-time post in Ophthalmology and will include General Ophthalmology on call cover of 1 in 14 for 2nd on call. Applicants are required to be a Registered Medical Practitioner, to be fully registered with the General Medical Council and listed on the Specialist Register or expected to be included within 6 months.

Job description Job responsibilities
Responsibilities of the post will include delivering outpatient clinics, overseeing and further developing the optometry led in-house glaucoma referral refinement primary care service, and theatre sessions. There will be an expectation to supervise surgical ophthalmology trainees -including level 4 subspecialty glaucoma trainees- in theatre and outpatients and undertake clinical teaching of medical and non-medical staff. Following induction, the post holder will be expected to join the on-call rota with a commitment of 1:14 second on call.
There are core clinical responsibilities and duties which will be expected to be fulfilled including: Shared core clinical activities, to include triaging referrals, offer consultant support to junior members of staff Managing outpatient clinics, in patient review and surgical waiting lists in conjunction with the relevant administrative teams. Provide support to emergency clinics and give advice to the emergency triage service.
Communicating with families, GPs and other supporting professionals.
Attendance and participation at clinical governance and audit sessions.
Delivery of sub -specialty clinics.
Provide support to emergency clinics and junior staff when working on site.
Cover for glaucoma subspecialty referrals and emergencies in addition to the planned daily clinical activities.
2 personal audits per year will be expected. In addition to CPD, teaching, research appraisal & assessment of trainees outside of DCCs.
Person Specification
GMC Specialist Register or within six months. FRCOphth or equivalent. Essential

Consultant level experience in the NHS
Proficient in Glaucoma filtration surgery. Able to perform catract surgery. Essential

Comfortable performing non-penetrating glaucoma surgery.
Management Essential
Experience working in multidisciplinary team. Evidence of active participation in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.

Evidence of leading ophthalmology quality improvement projects
Teaching Essential
Evidence of teaching Ophthalmic trainees, allied health professionals and medical students. Evidence of supervising colleagues performing cataract surgery.

Completion of Training the Trainers Course. Evidence of teaching glaucoma surgery.
Personal Attributes Essential
Strong clinical and personal credibility. Excellent communication interpersonal skills.

Desire to explore and develop new ways of working.
