About this role

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, conscientious and dedicated maintenance electrician/ electrical technician to join a team of engineering technicians, responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical plant and equipment at NHS/Health buildings maintained by CHoICE Facilities Services. The role will require the post holder to undertake the role of Competent Person (CP) as defined within Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 00 for multiple engineer services and support CHoICE to meet its statutory, mandatory and best practice commitments to its existing partners.

As part of the role, the post holder will be required to be flexible and have a wide ranging knowledge of electrical systems to ensure maintenance, repair and installation activities can be completed in the most efficient and effective manner whilst providing the best possible services. As part of highly diverse role, the successful candidate will have the opportunity operate and maintain a large scale electrical system which includes: Low Voltage distribution systems, LV switchboards, general and emergency lighting systems, theatre operating lights, nurse call systems, door access systems, fire alarms and uninterruptable power supplies.

Main duties of the job

The role will also require the participation in the current rolling 365 day shift pattern/system. The role will also require participation within the current on-call rota and undertake overtime when the service needs dictate, for which appropriate payments will be made. All applicants must have a positive, friendly and co-operative manner whilst being prepared to be flexible to meet the service needs of the Trust. The role will require the applicant to use their own initiative when undertaking a range of problem solving scenarios to allow for a satisfactory outcome whilst adapting to the changing demands of the role. Furthermore, the post holder will be required to provide technical advice, guidance and where necessary supervision to other CFS staff, contractors and Trust colleagues alike.

Successful applicants will need to have a knowledge of plumbing/mechanical systems with a detailed knowledge of electrical systems typically found within an NHS Trust. Completion of a City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3 in electrical engineering or equivalent is essential as well as the completion of a formally recognised, relevant and accredited apprenticeship.

This role will be required to undertake the: installation, commission, maintenance, service and repair of a full range of engineering related building fabric, equipment and installations at properties maintained by CHoICE Facilities Services. The role will witness a primary focus predominantly on electrical works, however the post holder may be required to diversify into other engineering and building trades. Furthermore, the post holder will provide a lead technical role within the Department to undertake supervisory/management duties of other direct employed labour force including contractors.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Basic numeracy & literacy skills to level 1 or equivalent. BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ level 3 or equivalent in suitable engineering related discipline. Completion of recognised and accredited apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline Completion of specialist engineering related training via formulised training or suitable experience.

Desirable

C & G 2391 Inspection & Testing of Electrical systems. City & Guilds 2377 Portable Appliance Testing. LV Competent Person Certificate.

Experience Essential

Knowledge and experience of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing systems typically found within a large NHS Acute Trust. Detailed knowledge and experience of electrical system requirements and regulations typically found within large NHS Acute Trust acquired through qualifications and relevant experience. Have suitable and sufficient experience as a competent person to a level able to accept a permit to work from an authorised person.

Desirable

Experience of working within an NHS Hospital Environment. Experience of operating Building Management Systems (BMS).

Skills & Knowledge Essential

Complex fault diagnosis required, interpreting technical issues and formulating technical solutions to improve performance and maintain the service. Detailed knowledge of the current UK Electrical Wiring Regulations (18th Edition). Able to use his/her own initiative when undertaking a range of problem solving scenarios to allow for a satisfactory completion. To have the ability to adapt to the changing demands of the role including the reaction to emergency situations. Able to prioritising his/her own workload and workloads of others ensuring that high quality patient care and SLA targets are achieved. Regularly provide and receive routine information and on occasion complex or sensitive information with a range Estates work colleagues, other Trust colleagues and external Trust/CFS contacts. Self-motivated with a desire to improve current practices. Understand and sympathise with issues relating to clinical staff/patients where Estates works have an impact on the clinical. Able to operate and use computer systems such as; electronic asbestos register, labour management system, pneumatic tube system, building management system, fire alarm systems. Able to adopt a flexible approach to working hours and on-call shift requirements.

Desirable

Knowledge of HTMs. Knowledge of planned preventative maintenance systems. Knowledge of building management systems (BMS).

Physical Skills Essential

Must have a valid UK driving license, willing to use Choice vehicles and able to travel to Choice managed sites. Is able to have the ability to undertake moderate physical activities for long periods throughout a typical working day. Is able to complete tasks which require short intensive bursts of effort before returning to moderate physical. Undertake regular moving and handling activities. Requirement for highly developed physical dexterity, for hand and eye co-ordination and manipulation of fine tools.
