About this role

Job summary

Based in the Royal Bolton Hospital Clinical Haematology service, the post holder will provide expert, patient-centred nursing care to patients living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), supporting their physical, psychological and social needs. The post holder will act as a clinical specialist, educator and advocate, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient outcomes and enhance quality of life.

Main duties of the job

Manage a defined caseload, including assessment, care planning, treatment, follow-up, and ongoing monitoring Deliver advanced clinical care, including support during acute crises, chronic disease management, and emergency response where needed Undertake nurse-led clinics and provide specialist Haematology treatments in line with agreed protocols and competence Develop and implement individualised care plans in partnership with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team Offer specialist advice, education, and emotional support to patients, carers, staff and students Act as a specialist resource and advocate for Sickle Cell Disease with the Haematology service and wider Trust Work closely with multidisciplinary teams and haemoglobinopathy network services to coordinate holistic care Contribute to service development, including protocols, policies, patient pathways, and awareness of Sickle Cell Disease Participate in audit, research, quality improvement, annual reviews, and service evaluations in line with HCC guidance Maintain accurate clinical records and data systems and support evidence-based practice Communicate highly complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers, and professional colleagues Represent the service professionally through teaching, presentations and training activity

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered Nurse education to degree level or willingness to undertake Post registration qualification in specialty Evidence of continuous professional development Advance communication skills/counselling qualification or willingness to undertake

Desirable

Specialist qualification in Haematology

Experience Essential

Significant experience in Haematology nursing, preferably with Sickle Cell patients Portfolio of evidence showing achievements in practice/specialty Experience in patient and professional education or mentorship

Desirable

Experience of administering treatments in Haematology Experience of audit, service evaluation or research

Skills Essential

Ability to work autonomously within agreed protocols and scope of professional practice Ability manage and prioritise a specialist caseload Evidence of excellent clinical record and maintained development of clinical leadership skills Demonstrate the ability to work in a highly demanding environment Evidence of diplomacy and negotiation skills

Desirable

Evidence of participation in research projects Training in de-escalation or managing aggressive patient behaviour Evidence of significant involvement in change management

Knowledge Essential

Knowledge of benign and malignant haematological condition Expert knowledge of Sickle Cell Diseases Understanding of haemoglobinopathy service standards and HCC requirements Understanding of evidence based practice Understanding of clinical governance Understanding of patient pathways, complexities and how to support the patient through these

Desirable

Knowledge of community and psychosocial support services for patients with Sickle Cell Disease
