Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Cancer Nurse Specialist team at Birmingham Children's Hospital as a 12-month maternity leave secondment within the Neuro-Oncology service.

This role is ideal for an experienced Band 6 or Band 7 nurse seeking to develop clinical leadership skills and gain experience within a specialist CNS/key worker role, supporting career progression.

You will be part of a dedicated key worker team, acting as a central point of contact for children and young people with neuro-oncology diagnoses and their families. Working collaboratively across the multi-disciplinary team, you will coordinate care across the pathway from diagnosis through treatment, transition and survivorship or palliative care, ensuring seamless, holistic and family-centred care.

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate nurse with excellent communication and organisational skills, a passion for children's cancer care, and a desire to develop within a specialist leadership role.

Main duties of the job

Work as part of the Neuro-Oncology CNS key worker team, coordinating care for children and young people across the pathway from diagnosis through treatment, transition and into survivorship or palliative care. Act as a central point of contact for patients and families, providing expert advice, support and education throughout their cancer journey.

Manage a defined caseload, delivering holistic, family-centered care in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team. Work collaboratively across organisational boundaries, including community teams, POSCUs and external agencies, to ensure seamless care delivery and continuity of care.

Contribute to MDT discussions, care planning and clinical decision-making, advocating for the needs of children, young people and their families. Provide clinical leadership within the team, acting as a role model and supporting high standards of care.

Undertake line management responsibilities for allocated staff, including supervision, appraisal (PDR), and supporting performance and professional development. Support the education, mentorship and development of staff and students within the service.

Participate in audit, research and service development initiatives to enhance patient care and outcomes. Work closely with palliative care and symptom control teams to support symptom management and parallel planning where required.
