About this role

Job summary

The successful candidate will join a cohesive team of 25 consultants delivering services across three acute hospital sites within Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. While all on-call and emergency commitments are based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH), the role is countywide, with clinical sessions shared across WRH, Kidderminster Treatment Centre (KTC), Alexandra Hospital Redditch (AHR), and selected community sites including Evesham, Malvern, Tenbury Wells and Bromsgrove. Consultants typically contribute to both obstetrics and gynaecology rotas, with a 1:22 obstetric rota providing 24-hour cover and a 1:21 gynaecology rota structured as a hot week. The successful candidate will participate in the obstetric on-call rota.

The Directorate delivers a comprehensive range of obstetric and gynaecology services. Gynaecology includes sub-specialties such as general gynaecology, urogynaecology (including pelvic floor and PFAP clinics), endometriosis and pelvic pain services, colposcopy, gynaecological oncology, menopause and endocrine services, infertility, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, and ambulatory care including EPAU, EGAU and outpatient hysteroscopy. Obstetric services include fetal medicine (including multiple pregnancy care), maternal medicine, high-risk obstetrics, perinatal care, and OASIS services.

Main duties of the job

It would be beneficial if the successful applicant was able to offer skills in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology and advanced labour ward skills are essential. Applicants should have evidence of advanced training and experience in Obstetrics and/or Gynaecology including 2 ATSMs or Subspecialty training. Previous experience at Consultant level would be beneficial. Following Good Medical Practice, the post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of Obstetrics and Gynaecology patients. The post holder will work independently in elective and emergency situations but can rely on the additional support of consultant colleagues within the Directorate. The successful applicant will participate in regular clinical meetings and governance activities, post-graduate activities and maintain continuing medical education in accordance with the requirements of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and General Medical Council.

The successful applicant will be asked to participate on the Obstetric on-call rota. The Obstetric Consultant is resident between 8.00am-9pm on weekdays and from 8.00am until 13.00 on weekends, returning for an evening ward round between 8pm and 9pm. Obstetric on call is non-resident between the hours of 9pm and 8am. It is expected that as part of the on-call duties the on-call Obstetric Consultant will undertake twice daily ward rounds of Obstetric inpatients.

Job description Job responsibilities

This job description together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.The post-holder will attend cross county and cross site meetings.The post-holder will collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.The post-holder will, if relevant, participate in the on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post.

Teaching Experience Essential

Qualifications Essential

Full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise. Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obs and Gynae (or expected within 6 months of interview date) via CCT or CESR (CP) CESR or European Community Rights
