Interim Divisional Manager (covering maternity leave) - Band 9

We are looking for a motivated and experienced leader who can bring energy and focus to the Bart's Heart Centre. The post will be for 12 months for a fixed term maternity leave cover starting from mid October 2026.

The successful candidate will form part of the senior leadership team, alongside the Divisional Director and Associate Directors' of Nursing, responsible for ensuring the safe, high quality and efficient delivery of services across:

o Electrophysiology and Interventiono Specialised Cardiologyo Respiratory Medicine (inc RLH and MEH)o Networked Cardiology (inc RLH, WXH and NUH)o Cardiac & Thoracic Surgeryo Peri-operative Medicineo Theatreso Cath Labso North of London Cardiology Operational Delivery Network

The DM will provide strategic leadership for services (as identified) in the Heart Centre, ensuring that there are appropriate systems and processes within the Centre to enable staff to deliver good quality clinical care and drive forward the service improvement agenda to achieve efficiency gains and improve the operational effectiveness of the Centre.

Main duties of the job

Specifically the Divisional Manager for the Bart's Heart Centre will:

o Take day to day responsibility and accountability for the operational running of the Heart Centre, including NHS Recovery, key operational targets, Governance, People and Finance etc.o Achieve both NHS and any identified Private Targets.o With the Director of the Heart Centre and Associate Directors' of Nursing lead and performance manage the Directorate Teamso Lead the Centre to ensure national and local targets are achieved and that they meet the needs of the local community and the wider NHS and fulfil commissioner agreements.o Develop and implement plans to deliver the relevant Trust objectives as required.o Monitor and manage performance to ensure that patient-centred services are of a consistently high standard.o Provide leadership and management to both direct and indirect reports.o Establish strong links with the wider health and social care community by securing their involvement in the effective delivery of services e.g. ICS, Cardiology Operational Delivery Network

Qualifications Essential

Degree or equivalent level Further evidence of management/leadership training and continuous professional development

Desirable

Relevant postgraduate qualification in management discipline

Experience Essential

Extensive experience at a senior level in an acute Trust/Hospital environment, including a sound understanding of the performance and governance requirements of the NHS for acute Trusts (At least 4 years in a GM role in a hospital setting). Significant experience of financial management (millions rather than thousands) and rigorous financial management and control to meet agreed targets Experience of establishing and applying performance management systems in areas like contract monitoring, staff management and departmental performance indicators Experience of service improvement Strong performance management experience

Desirable

Experience and training in handling media Experience of leadership in regional or national forums for service delivery or development. Contribution to a local or national policy with responsibility for audit and assurance that the standards are being met.

Skills Essential

High degree of political sensitivity and experience of dealing with a range of issues in a complex stakeholder environment Sound analytical, negotiation and numerical skills Ability to develop and influence a high performing, collaborative team, whilst allowing flexibility for members to develop against their own personal targets Ability to establish rapport/credibility with Trust staff including clinicians, managers, staff, staff representatives and professionals from outside the Trust Establish strong, supportive working relationships with the senior team and nonexecutive directors Strong commercial and business acumen and judgment, understanding the need for efficient services and the impact of operational efficiencies on financial performance, the patient experience and staff motivation and morale Ability to develop strong working relationships with the chair and non-executive directors and provide support to the senior team individually when they are tackling challenging issues Ability to assess situations and take calculated risks based on learning and experience, to achieve longer-term service improvements Fully understands and can deliver all key constitutional targets, ensuring patient equity of service.

Knowledge Essential

Track record of achievement as a leader which demonstrates significant successes through innovation and a strong but sensitive style, which contributes directly to the patient experience and continuous improvement Demonstrate well developed negotiation skills coupled with the ability to tackle poor performance effectively Experience of instigating and leading complex change to achieve continuous improvement Evidenced experience of building and sustaining effective and productive working relationships with a range of people at local and regional level including statutory, voluntary and private sector organisations Evidence of a collaborative management style coupled with improving quality of service provision at a strategic level Keeps abreast with national developments in health and social care through active involvement in local and national networks
