About this role

Job summary

The Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Childrens Urgent Care Centre at South Tyneside are looking to recruit an experienced nurse to join our established and highly valued team of Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioners in our state-of-the-art facilities.

The role will allow you to develop your assessment, diagnostic and patient management skills within the Paediatric Emergency Department, Childrens Short Stay Assessment Unit and Childrens Urgent Care Centre and you will be involved in all aspects of care to children with conditions ranging from minor trauma through to major medical presentations

The posts are initially offered as Band 6 trainee Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioner positions and the successful candidates will operate in a supernumerary capacity for a period of 6 months until specific competencies have been met. The post holders will progress to a Band 7 Emergency Nurse Practitioner at the end of the 6 month supernumerary period provided all competencies have been achieved and that you meet the essential criteria of the Band 7 ENP role

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting time for individual development as we respond to the evolving demand of urgent and emergency care delivery across Sunderland and South Tyneside. The post holder will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital but will rotate between the Paediatric Emergency Department at SRH and the Childrens Urgent Care Unit at South Tyneside District Hospital on a regular basis to enhance their skills and knowledge in care delivery to children requiring non-urgent, urgent and emergency treatment.

The successful candidate will be joining a team of over 70 experienced nurse practitioners, qualified nurses and health care assistants who see and treat in excess of 40,000 patients across both sites each year andyou will be responsible for assessing, diagnosing and treating children with a wide range of clinical conditions which will include both medical and trauma cases. You will work alongside ENPs, consultants and junior doctors from a range of training programmes including paediatric emergency medicine, paediatrics and adult emergency medicine.

The Paediatric Emergency Department provides a 24 hour ENP service and the Urgent Care Centre a 7 day a week 9am 10pm service therefore applicants must be able to demonstrate a reliable work record and flexibility in working hours.

Previous post registration experience of working in a Paediatric Emergency Department or similar environment is essential.

Training will be provided through a structured teaching programme and you will be supported throughout by a PEM Consultant Clinical Supervisor. You will be expected to rotate between the Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Childrens Urgent Care department at South Tyneside District Hospital

Person Specification

Skills & Knowledge Essential

Awareness of national health and social care policy. Knowledge of best practice in area of specialism. Thorough understanding of expanded roles/professional practice issues. Clinical teaching experience. Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required. Able to work without supervision. Competent in the use of IT packages. Proven interpersonal skills. Evidence of competency in relation to clinical practices appropriate to the post.

Desirable

Project management skills.

Qualifications Essential

Registered Childrens Nurse. Degree in nursing studies or evidence of currently working towards this (UK equivalent). Mentorship certificate/ Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience. Clinical skills accreditation or evidence of currently working towards.

Desirable

Leadership and Management course. Qualification in specialty. Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.

Experience Essential

Experience of care delivery. Experience of the specialist which would normally be gained through working as a Band 5. Experience of leading a team/supervising junior staff. Evidence of innovation in practice. Evidence of practice development. Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients

Physical Skills Essential

Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy. Able to travel access sites.
