Job summary

London Renal Transplant Surgical Fellowship

We are inviting applications for an exciting 2-year specialised fellowship in renal transplantation. In addition to renal transplantation the fellowship provides experience in dialysis access surgery, pancreas transplantation and multi-organ retrieval.

This unique fellowship will provide exposure to two leading London transplant centres. One year spent at West London Renal Transplant Centre (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust) and one year at the Royal Free Renal Transplant Centre.

This post is ideal for those aiming to consolidate existing experience in renal transplantation. The successful candidate will join collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams in both centres and gain exposure to all aspects of pre- and post-transplant care, in living and deceased donation. This is a clinical fellowship. Additionally, fellows will be encouraged to complete and present audit and research output. There will be ample opportunity over the two years to present and publish, nationally and internationally.

kINDLY NOTE:Two posts available (one at Imperial and one at the Royal Free), offering excellent cross-site experience.Successful candidates will rotate between the two hospital sites after 12 months.

Main duties of the job

West London Renal Transplant Centre:

The postholder will have the following duties: -

Management of in-patients, out-patient clinics, ward rounds, radiological and transplant MDT's.

Elective and emergency operating lists: including living and deceased donor transplantation, laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy, general surgery (hernias/ polycystic nephrectomy), transplant nephrectomy, vascular access and peritoneal dialysis surgical procedures.

Outpatient clinic duty includes recipient evaluation clinics, living donor evaluation and post-transplant follow-up clinic.

Audit/ Quality improvement activities

Royal Free Hospital:

The postholder will have the following duties: -

Out-patient clinics- assessment of CKD patients requiring vascular access or peritoneal dialysis and work-up for renal transplantation

In-patient and day case operating lists

Care of renal transplant in-patients

Attendance and presentations at multidisciplinary meetings (transplant listing, vascular access, histopathology, radiology and review of deceased-donor offers)

Participation in the audit and governance activities of the department

Job description Job responsibilities

West London Renal Transplant Centre:

The fellow will divide their time between inpatient and outpatient clinical work, covering transplant and dialysis access surgery. The appointee will be part of team of five Senior Clinical Fellows, three Specialist Registrars, and a CT1 doctor, working with seven consultant surgeons. The fellow will join a rota with the existing SpRs and Fellows covering the surgical Middle-grade resident on-call. The transplant surgical team works closely with the nephrology team (resident doctors and consultants).

Royal Free Hospital:

The successful candidate will work closely with the Consultant Renal Transplant Surgeons, Clinical Fellows, the Transplant SpR, CT and FY1, the Transplant Nurse Practitioners and the nephrology team in the care of recent and established renal transplant patients, and in the care of other renal patients undergoing surgical. The renal transplant surgical department is closely integrated with the transplant nephrology team, with whom we have an excellent relationship. Ward rounds are conducted jointly, providing a fantastic learning environment for trainees.

EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS Essential

On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice

Desirable

MD, PhD FRCS or Equivalent

Knowledge/skills Clinical expertise in Specialty/sub specialty Essential
