Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor within Breast Surgery. This is a fixed term post for 6 months in the first instance.

The successful candidate will work within the Breast team. Together with their Breast team colleagues they will be responsible for the day-to-day management of their team's inpatients, perform the duties of the Trust Specialty Doctor, attending theatre and outpatients sessions and seeing patients within the Breast Screening Unit.

The Breast Centre is a friendly and forward thinking department with a fully digital environment with 4 Dimensions Hologic Mammography units. The unit has also recently benefitted from a radiotherapy centre which has been built and completed on-site in the last 6 months, and is an NHS Breast Screening unit.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Care

The successful candidate will work within the Breast team. Together with their Breast team colleagues they will be responsible for the day-to-day management of their team's inpatients, perform the duties of a Specialty Doctor post - attending theatre and outpatient sessions, and seeing patients within the Breast Screening Unit. The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

1. Multidisciplinary team-work is envisaged as a key component of the working of this Trust and will involve Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) discussion with other colleagues.

2. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

3. Provision of cover for colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.

4. Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.

5. Undertaking ward duties under the direction of senior colleagues.

1. Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.

2.Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Management and Leadership Responsibilities

All staff in each Directorate are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician for General Surgery, Breast and Urology, to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate.

1. To support the Breast team in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Directorate Management Team.

2. To contribute to the leadership and development of the service under the direction of the Lead Clinician and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trusts business plans.

3. Work in partnership with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.

4. Work within the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.

Professional Responsibilities

Clinical

The successful candidate will be supervised by the consultants within the Breast Surgical team: Mr Nathan Coombs, Mr Simon Hawkins, Ms Anushka Chaudhry and Ms Williams. They will work in close liaison with the Breast Team Trust Doctors, Ms Indrani Mukherji and Ms Farah Syed, and the Breast Screening Unit. As part of the team, the postholder will have responsibility for patients on the unit/ward. The postholder will work closely with colleagues in delivering and developing the service.

The timetable for this post is comprised of 10 programmed activities per week and gives time for personal development and study. The successful candidate also will be expected to participate with the training of junior staff and medical students attached to the Breast surgery department. There is an excellent opportunity to become involved in the departments Oncoplastic service, attending reconstruction consultations and theatre lists as well as an opportunity to work with the Plastics team at Oxford. The post offers the opportunity to work closely with the oncology team within the Multidisciplinary Team meetings.

Qualifications Essential

Fully registered with the GMC 4 Years post-graduate experience including 2 years within Breast Successful completion of MRCS or equivalent Evidence of training progression

Experience Essential

Completed F1 and F2 year (or equivalent outside of UK Completed CT/ST1/2 in General Surgery (or equivalent outside of UK) Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices (or equivalent) Clinical teaching/training experience
